It cracks me up how Ms. Three PhDs totally failed as head of security and surveillance, not to mention basic common sense by running directly at the Alpha vamp with what looked like a letter opener...

Loved the idea of Dean cooling off...Sam needs to kill Garth...b/w recall??? Sam regresses from where I had hoped again and it bugs me because he is smarter than this! But this play on dealing with his mom not staying home and cooking is insane since we have seen them hunt together. He just hates her lying at who she was working with. They almost lost Cas and did lose a hunter based on the bad intel from those bastards who tortured his brother. She took NO responsibility since she has been back like she keeps running from spending 80% of her returned time with those dudes instead of the kids she doesn't care to get to know. In the immortal words of Cas "STOW YOUR CRAP!" and try being around without cutting crusts off sandwiches because thats not what they want or need.

Best line of the episode, "put your fucking pinky down" cracked me up

I think a lot of your points about the BMOL are valid. They are definitely a big brother type of group. But something that I think about when rewatching this is that the boys and other American hunters are essentially vigilantes. They do not answer to anyone...including sometimes each other...which is problematic. Sure, that freedom is what the show is based on. The fact that they are team freewill. But we also need to acknowledge that while we mostly see the boys who we trust. There have been several examples throughout the show of hunters who abuse that power including in this episode. I think accountability is important, but it matters where that comes from. I don't think I can even pick what is the best option for handling these things. But I love that the show brings that discussion up. It's definitely something applicable to real life as well.

I hate the men of letters too, unlike you though i think Sam agreeing to monster genocide is way out of character for him, he's always been more sympathetic to monsters than dean, how many times did he have to tell dean that not all monsters are bad, he himself was a monster once, actually both of them have, i can understand why Mary would be down for this but it makes no sense that Sam would, this is where the show started to make characters do stuff to further the plot instead of adjusting the plot to fit the characters, i wish the show didn't blame a woman for a man's action like they're doing with Mary, dean was never a kid because john raised him as a soldier, that's not on Mary, many people lose their significant other and still take care of their kids, this wasn't inevitable, john made his choices, that's not on Mary, i understand dean's anger toward Mary's recent shady actions, i hate them too and there's no quicker way to get kicked out of dean's life than to hurt cas, it's significant that dean's issue was that Mary almost got cas dead and sam's issue was that a hunter died because of her, very fitting to their characters, however blaming Mary for his entire childhood is a bit unfair, misplaced anger if you ask me, it should be directed at john, although the "i never was (a kid)" was adlib by Jensen so maybe it wasn't the writers intentions to blame Mary for it, Mary is right in saying that Sam & dean aren't kids and she's not just a mom, it's silly to expect her to make them food and kiss them goodnight, dean still clinging to the false image of mary he has from his childhood that i am not sure was ever true, it's from a 4 year old perspective after all, Mary is more complicated than your typical house wife from the 70s, I'm glad dean is starting to recognize that and maybe let go of that idea of her in his head and see her as the full person she is and not just as a mother figure, all you have to do to get dean to listen is offer a bottle of alcohol and a hunt 😅😂, he's too easy, it's somewhat worrying that dean's way of dealing with emotions is wanting something/someone to hit instead of talking when Sam offered, what's with dean telling Sam to take sides between him and cas?? Him and cas are literally on the same side! It's not like Sam is gonna disown cas and Mary to "take dean's side" on arguments, what is this? Middle school? i hate ketch so much ever since he killed Magda, you're right about Sam, the men of letters didn't kill the alpha, he did! Without him they would all be dead so i don't understand why he would walk away from that with the understanding that he needs the bmol?!! It makes no sense, they're bunch of fancy suits, hunters do all the work, he & his brother have been doing research and collecting knowledge that the Brits couldn't dream of, the Brits keeps saying that hunters just go kill monsters but that's not true, hunters watch and gather Intel too! Just on a smaller scale, i am the same as you, i perfer when the show is about heaven and hell too, i know many people prefer the simpler motw episodes about urban legends and think the show was ruined in season 4 by introducing angels but definitely not me, i love all the angel lore and get bored of ghost episodes and motw episodes in general but the bmol stuff are the worst

Really love all your reactions and am so much enjoying your reactions to this season! So many of the same emotions I felt when I first watched! Great stuff! Cheers!!

Absolutely love the scene with the boys and Mary in the bunker. Best scene of the episode. One of the top scenes of the season. "I never was" one of the top moments of the show.

I think Sam is open to trying something because he sees the possible benefits. I also think he is open because he is willing to go down the road with Mary. We all know Dean and we understand him. He is not willing to entertain ANY idea when he is hurt, he gets angry, he shuts down. Will he come around, hmm, I doubt it, cause he's Dean. The one thing that really irritates me are these shady characters coming to town and talking to Dean like they KNOW him. NO, you do not know Dean. Dean is a monster killer, but he is NOT a murderer. They always seem to want to label him. Maybe it makes Ketch feel better to think there are others with his bloody bent, but not Dean. Look how fast he ran to save Mary. They need to stop trying to label our boy, because he is nothing like them.

I don’t interpret anything in the bunker argument as placing blame on Mary for their childhood. I see it as stating a reality which I don’t think they have ever directly expressed to Mary. Mostly it’s a son saying he had wanted her around since they missed out on it for 33 years and that he is hurt and angry she would secretly work with their enemy while choosing to barely be in their life.

While it may be a very painful moment for them, I love the scene where Dean kicks Mary out of the bunker. I believe this is the first time we have seen him express his personal pain and anger to one of his parents. He actually gives himself agency in that moment, rather than being the dutiful, respectful son. Off-hand, the only other thing I remember is Dean making a passive aggressive comment to John in S1 of something like “getting you on the phone…I got a better chance of winning the lottery.” So I always applaud Dean for voicing his true emotions here rather than pushing them all down, as he usually did with his parents. I really enjoyed your anti-BMoL tirade at the end. The way you angrily said “Mick…is fine…I GUESS,” gave me a good laugh.

Kit

the scene with Mary and dean in the bunker was absolute gold because even though it is such a core part of his personality, we very rarely get to see dean to openly express the pain he feels from his childhood. the "I never was" is possibly one of the saddest lines of the show (but an epic one) and it was improv by Jensen! unfortunately for dean and his abandonment issues he's somehow surrounded himself with people who have a habit of running away. personally, as a brit myself, I've always hated the British men of letters. aside from the fact that they're just not very well written, I've always felt like they are a parody of a very untrue stereotype about british people and all their posh accents get on my nerves, but to echo what Shelley said... mick is alright, I guess

Michele

I liked how we got to see that Dean really isn't like Ketch. Just a Killer. He stopped Ketch from torturing the vampire. Dean still has a line he won't cross. He may feel the need to Hunt things to deal with his emotions, but he's not a masochist about it. So, he's nothing like Ketch.

Steve Quast

I hated losing the alpha vamp in this episode. He was one of my favorite villains in the show that we saw way too little of. I would have much preferred if he'd lived and took out a bunch of the Men of Letters while escaping. As for Ketch, he's one of my least favorite characters to this point in the show (the other one being Gordon from seasons 2 and 3).

@Hasnaa Regarding your "... what's with dean telling Sam to take sides between him and cas?? Him and cas are literally on the same side!..." ...are you referring to/is this about the following scene/lines in the episode? Dean: And this whole peacemaker shtick that you've been running, first with Cass, now with Mom, it's getting old, man. Sam: What's that supposed to mean? Dean: You're always playing the middle, Sam. For once, why don't you pick a side? If yes, then I think Dean is actually referring to the episode Lily Sunder where Sam is siding with Cas during this convo: SAM: So, what, you're just gonna keep walking past each other in the kitchen, not saying a word? DEAN: Maybe. SAM: Look, yes, Cass killed Billie, but he saved us. He saved Mom. How long are you gonna stay pissed? .... SAM: My point is, Cass thought he was doing the right thing. I guess Dean is pissed that during both his "issues" with Cas and Mary, Sam chose to be a "peacemaker" ...

Hasnaa

I know what dean is referring to, i just don't think it's Sam "taking sides" between him and cas since there are not on opposite sides, cas killed Billie for them, he's not on the opposite side, Sam was just asking dean not to give cas the cold shoulder that's all

rose mnor

Yes true, there is not an actual "opposing" side in play here at all, just wordplay. Dean just wants Sam to agree with him, i.e. 'pick his side' ... instead, Sam keeps volleying with things that frustrate him... that are out of his control.
