So it seems that we are finished with the stretch of plot-arc episodes from last season, which started from ep 8.21 to 9.03 since this is the first of the standalone ones. And Robbie started us off with a corker of a concept - a retelling of the Wizard of Oz lore. If we look at 8.04, Robbie too started the standalone episode of the season with an outside of the normal format one too - Bitten. I am sensing a pattern here, Robbie. And if we look further ahead to S10 and S11, yeah, Robbie's first episode of the season is, let just say - he loves to take risks and give us outside of the box kind of episodes. Just look at 10.05 and 11.04. Shelley, you are going to get such a treat, I promise you! ... Speaking of S8 Bitten, there was a Q&A with Robbie Thompson back in 2015, in which a fan reported that he tried to pitch a story - an episode with a retelling of the time when the boys were apart - Dean during his purgatory stint and Sam before he hit the dog. But Jeremy didn't choose that one and had chosen Bitten instead. (I am putting the Q&A in the reply - Patreon keeps glitching - my post kept disappearing)

Let me just copy and paste here the Q&A (the quotes were paraphrased and not exact):- Sam & Dean doing laundry and arguing about who has to watch the dryer b/c they don’t like others handling their clothes. They watch the dryer and they’re flashing back to what happened after Dean was sent to Purgatory—Dean’s POV (very dark) and what Sam was doing before he hit that fucking dog. Dean’s story: It was the story of how Dean used every single bullet in the gun he had when he arrived in Purgatory. (!) Sam’s story: Everything Sam did to find his brother before he hit that fucking dog. He met a hunter who kept telling him it was over. He’s following a dead-end lead and then he hits the dog. Dean uses the last bullet and gets that tomahawk thing. They’d never tell each other but we’d know. /end *sigh* If only we had that story. Robbie is the best. The way he phrased and kept repeating his words - that fucking dog - lol. Guys, I am sensing that Robbie too is not enamored with that storyline.

Now here is something to take note on. Dean keeps always choosing to the risk of bringing back people he considers family even though it brings greater risks to the people around him. He wanted to go guns blazing in 9x2 to get two hunters even though it was very dangerous and they were dead if not for zeke. He went looking for cas even though that put ezekiel and Sam at risk. And in this episode he tells zeke to bring back charlie despite the greater threat of the witch which zeke could have helped solve. There are some parallels but i feel like mentioning them now would spoil something down the line. But if you ever do a rewatch it would be interesting to point them out after you finish the season.
