April 1912. As soon as they said the month I knew what all the hubbub was about. It's a hell of thing even today much less over 100 years ago.

Didn't expect this but love it! Can only hope more people request more episodes or one day you pick it up as a regular series

I love this show. I am definitely up for a re-watch if you decide to pick it up.

When I suggested this reaction, I thought you could find this setting interesting. I never thought you were already considering watching it at some point. Loved your reaction. I'm most likely going to request more episodes in the future! :)

So, happy to watch your reactions to this show!! I've been meaning to for a while. Considering you're already on episode 5, you may have already figured this stuff out. But I'm a giant, history nerd, so here's what I know about some of your questions. So a valet (yeah, pronounced val-ay in North America and val-et in Britain) is basically there to take care of the Lord of the house, in this case Lord Grantham. He was there to help him dress (a lot of their clothing was so friggin' complicated, they couldn't have done it alone) but the valet also helps make sure the lord is dressed appropriately, he takes care of all his clothing, airing out and cleaning them, polishing shoes, keeping track of seasonal attire, and a host of other duties that involve caring for the man he works for. In addition, as they said, he's meant to act as a third footman at big or important dinners, he's meant to pack and carry all the luggage when they're travelling, and a few other heavier jobs that Mr. Bates likely would have struggled with. But as William said there are lots of ways to get around that. I think Lord Grantham was mostly going to let him go because he thought it was causing too much trouble below stairs and he didn't want to have the other servants upset. Mr. Bates is just such a sweetheart and him and Anna are both too adorable! Oh, and that jackass Duke was played by Charlie Cox. And he was only interested in Mary as long as he thought the title and all the money was now going to be settled on her. As soon as Grantham told him he had no plans of making that happen, that the title and the estate and money together were all going to be settled on his distant cousin, the Duke was suddenly not interested at all. Jackass. I'm so looking forward to continuing this series with you. 😊 It's a favourite of mine.
