It's been 10 years and I still mourn for Ellen and Jo.

I think the writers are aware of mental health, but we’re trying to amplify, Dean’s ignorance and upbringing here. By season 5 Jared Padalecki (Sam) have already been open about his depression and anxiety, he even has a campaign called Always Keep Fighting.

One of the most admirable qualities of this show was it's boldness in tackling topics usually not spoken about in real life. Boundaries, consent, free will and choices are themes we see in every episode layered between the story. Sometimes it's just uncomfortable while others can be downright appalling at times, and yet it creates an environment for us (the viewer) to have those conversations that NEED to happen. The parallel between the wraith and lobotomies was an excellent catch! I don't think I've ever seen or heard anyone pick up on that before. They were never afraid to really go there for most of the show's run, and clearly, that contributed to the longevity. One of the biggest reveals for me in this episode was the imaginary Dr. telling Dean all about his fears and failures. It showed us why he was unable to take anything seriously, and made me understand Dean's schtick in a way I hadn't before. Sam's admission at the end about not understanding why he was always so angry was just as heartbreaking, even though we weren't given any more insight. But we also got some really cute scenes and another very well casted guest star in Jon Gries (who has literally been in everything!) from Lost to Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite and yes, the X-Files. But I didn't remember him from anything except in "Real Genius" as Lazlo, because the roles were played so similarly.

yeah, i agree with this. i just wish they would have dean learn about his ignorance. i don't mind the ignorance, but i like when my characters grow from it because it allows the audience to learn too. art can be a powerful tool in social change. that's great about jared's commitment though!

I absolutely love how Sam and Dean get themselves admitted to the psych hospital by simply explaining the plot of season 4. The way Jensen and Jared acted it, makes it hysterical. Along with Dr. Babar. “I don’t know. I don’t have any elephant books.” I was amused how you had to look away from the “Pudding!!!” scene. Even though they don’t show anything at all, that sound effect really gets you. 😂😂😂 It is a fandom favorite. The line was originally scripted for Sam, but the actors thought it made more sense for Dean’s personality, which is so true.

You have to keep in mind that this was written a whole decade ago, and things weren't exactly PC yet. Also, I think with Dean's advice, he said the right thing. I'm not saying it's healthy, or good advice under normal circumstances, but people are literally going to die in droves if they can't figure out a way to stop everything. He was also probably worried about Sam abandoning him again (it's kind of Sam's go to move), and leaving him to try and combat the impossible by himself. Plus you forget, Sam may have Lucifer hanging over his head, but Dean has just as much if not more pressure on him because he has Michael hanging over his head. He's trying to hold on, when even people like his future self are telling him that giving himself up is the right thing to do, even though it will make him essentially brain dead. I just think Dean doesn't get as much sympathy as he deserves sometimes because yeah, Sam talks about it more, but that's just not something Dean has ever learned how to do, so everything always ends up focused on Sam's trauma when Dean has had far more at this point. (Being the one that always had to deal with their emotionally abusive father, having to become a parent at like the age of 5, his brother always trying to leave him, getting tortured for decades, etc, etc, etc.)

I am slowly catching up with your reactions. I got quite a bit behind due to not having internet, but I'm working on making that time up now. I've always found this episode pretty interesting, once I realized that most of everything that was happening was when the boys were already influenced by the wraith. During my first re-watch I was able to really understand more what was happening and I knew that all of those conversations Dean was having with the lady "psychologist" was all in his head. So he was basically talking to himself. Which is kind of sad, given what was said by both him and the imaginary psychologist. And then poor Sam. He's really not doing well and his anger worried me. I understood about Dean and why he told Sam what he did. He never learned any better and it's how he dealt with things. I'm sure it's how he dealt with his memories on his time in Hell. I really don't think seeing a therapist would do much good for them at this point. Let that flood gate open? eek! But, they really should talk more. I just don't think Dean is confident he could manage if he did take a look inside himself.

I love that Jared has been open about his own mental health and dealing with depression. His Always Keep Fighting campaign has raised a lot of money for mental health programs. He started by creating an Always Keep Fighting shirt to sell thinking that he might sell a couple hundred, but they ended up selling well over 10,000 the first time, if I remember correctly. He has made different designs over the years and sold different swag and each time they sell more and more. I have a few of the different AKF shirts and a cell phone case. They are all philanthropists and so proud of this cast.
