Orca and Mako (chapter sketches) (Patreon)

while I'm inking and coloring some commission, I prepared the sketches for the second chapter of the Barracuda comic (still have to find a title for the whole thing) where I introduce her rivals, Orca "Silverfang" Belmarine (the girl) and Mako "Mainmast" Belmarine (the dude).
For your know, the girls seen in the first page of the comic is named Gorgo, and she's Orca's vice admiral.
Probably I'll invest some time on this project, since apparently there's an editor who liked the first chapter, and who knows if this doesn't become our first officially published comic.
Please leave some comment regarding the sketches and character design, I'd like to have some feedback on this project.

From the sketches I would definitely like to see the finished product. There are two things I'm not too sure about. First, the name for the girl "Orca"- references the predatory sea whale obviously. However looking at her I'm not seeing any 'orca' like traits. Which ties into the second issue. The half mask she wears, is more reminiscent of a shark in my opinion than an orca. Barracuda is a predatory fish and Mako is a shark. You kind of have a 'fish' thing going with this series, a sea mammal breaks the pattern a little; unless that is something you want to do. Either way, I've made some criticisms of your work before, but when the final production came out everything worked wonderfully. Looking forward to it.

well, I have to admit that with Orca I went with the "letting my hand go and see what happens" way to create the design. The vibe I wanted to give her was the one of a sea dragon (I don't remember if in the sketches can be seen clearly, but her hair, at the end, splits in a way similar to a fin) The name, also, was choosen, like Barracuda, more on a "that sounds cool" rather "ok, I've give her a design of this kind, let's find a related name" (that's why Barracuda looks like a shark)

Alright, the sea dragon makes for sense for the look. I'll admit the name Orca is pretty cool. I've had my own creative issues when naming things or characters, so no hard judgements. Now that I've given everything a second look, digested what I've seen so far and read your reply... Orca and Mako have the same last name (finally noticed). So I'm going to assume that they're married. Also you mention Gorgo is a vice admiral, so that means Orca is an Admiral. What rank is Mako? This little sketch sampler continues to make me ask more questions about the world and characters your creating. I think it would be best for me to shut up and just wait to see what you come up with.

Mako is also and Admiral, in the story he went meeting Orca after months of missions on sea (they're both arrived the same day for a specific reason that is explained on the comic) but I don't want to spoil too much before the completition of the comic.
