On the ship, it is possible to go into something of a cabin fever state where you're fed up of seeing the same old interior of the ship, space drifting slowly by. 

So the STR created a series of Simulation Booths for the crews recreational use. These can be used in several ways. 

-As a form of therapy to chill out and relax

-A way to access your own memories, for instance take yourself back to your childhood home. 

-Take part in recreational activity, could be sport, lazer tag etc. 

There is another form of these activities, but that is more in the form of a VR setup whereby the character will be asleep and stationary, but they will be able to relive memories, take part in multiplayer games with friends, roleplay any story based material (choose your character scenario) or to simply dream of whatever you want!
