If she didn't push him away, it's possible that they could have avoided opening the gateway. It looked like physical contact with Susu was needed. But once Yog-Sothoth had her, it was all over. Whatever they would have needed to make a difference after that point (Necronomicon?), they just didn't have. Especially now that eldritch terrors are streaming in!

It kind of makes me wonder, is Yog going to use Susu to produce more Dunwich Horrors?

Maybe she was the only reason the horrors awaken or were drawn there (or the only reason yog sothoth itself was drawn there with the resonator)

This explains so much about the entire past story and the demonic shadow creature in the campaign!

I honestly feel like at the time he was too much of a rookie to think fairly among these things, the enviroment was so new to him and this is one of the few rarest moments he had contact with someone. He reacted out of fear and this event is probably what made him stronger.
