Gally

He and his rather thick arms can do it

“This feeling of regularly reliving the same moment without being able to influence the result, this desire to return to this precise moment where everything changed to change what happened. Regret. The most horrible torture that one can inflict on oneself, there is no greater suffering than that which consists of saying to oneself " “I wish so much that it had happened differently”

It is rare for a story to make me relate so much to the dread the characters feel... The last 2 that came to mind is a slave story I had been reading and the other one was one of the David Gemmel books, where you follow an old master archer (considered the best shot of the lands) and a younger archer rival that legacy, that he hates at the start of the story... He is a snotty young adult that knows nothing about the world, to the point he actually roots for this kids success as he undergoes a dangerous assignment of their current predicament and finally accepts that this guy... earned his spot and he should just give up on trying to "not admit he is just not longer in his prime". Then to find this young guy, nearly at the end of the story, nailed to a pole, tortured to death by the natives he was supposed to invade to safe someone. He is so distraught by that, he just... walks in right in their camp to gently take down his body and hug him before getting massacred by the locals... Good stuff, I remember those emotions very strongly.
