Praise the lord's farts

Drake Myers

SOS to all NEAS fans: I'm a social work intern at a housing/foodshelf agency and the other two interns are always talking about how Jesse Lee Peterson and Larry Elder shows that "even black people can see that they shouldn't be lazy" and how "everyone who is poor is just lazy and worthless". What can I do to relate/talk them away from this cult of stupidity and cruelty?

big yikes. I guess try to be nice to them, see where you have common ground, but challenge any time they spout that kind of terrible shit. Wish I had better advice lol

my heart just sort of dropped when I read this. I work in mental health and there are 3 generations of social workers in my family. I am curious to know where you are located. That being said. Social Work has long roots in white supremacist kinds of thinking/attitudes and in general so much harm has been perpetrated under the guise of mental health help. First, if you can--speak up when you hear these kinds of things. It is a racist belief that you can generalize an attribute to entire race of people and those beliefs get carried into the work in all kinds of insidious ways. You don't have to change their minds, but challenge by speaking up about what you believe. Its so hard. And doubly so when working within a culture or system that can have conversations like the one above without even thinking. Jesse Lee Peterson, Candice Owens and the like are really problematic because they perpetuate the tropes, stereotypes and help white people feel entirely justified.in not challenging their racist beliefs or question the ocean they find themselves in. Read How to Be An Anti-Racist by Ibram Kendi. and find a group of like-minded people to talk about it with, because that will help you feel stronger to address these issues and stand up in the moment of these conversations when everything is saying...just keep it comfortable.

seconding Kendi, just read that myself its very good. For actual interactions with your clients you might find the article "Address, Avert, or Avoid? Navigating Conflicts in Client-Clinician Beliefs During Polarized Times" from the just published issue of Behavior Therapist helpful. You can find that here https://www.abct.org/docs/PastIssue/43n6.pdf it starts on the 18th page of that document.
