3D REALMS VIBE CHECK (Patreon)

What began as a roundup exploded into this.

There's still a roundup coming next month with a bunch of demos and early access titles I want to highlight. I know I haven't done one in a while. I've kind of been saving up my time and energy until I thought I had a good batch of demos to talk about.

However, while I was writing the script, my rage, annoyance, and general confusion with Graven creeped in, and I was thinking "why am I surprised? This is a Slipgate Ironworks game." And then I remembered that I still had Phantom Fury demo footage, which Slipgate is also making. And then I had to talk about Bombshell. And then? I had to dig deeper and deeper into a madness that's been on my mind for years having to do with Slipgate/Interceptor and 3D Realms. Why do their games keep coming out like this? Can't say I have a solid answer to that question because I can't go around broadcasting unsubstantiated rumors because this is not, and will never be, a drama channel. I can speculate as to why a game is bad and make fun of its flaws, and I certainly spend a lot of time doing that, but the bottom line is that I felt a certain obligation to make this video and steer people away from these games because I felt it would be irresponsible not to. This genre is my bread and butter and when a studio comes along and craps out what, to the untrained eye, can look like cheap nostalgia-bait with awful gameplay, I feel a little responsible for warning my audience about them.

Graven is a fucking maddening experience that was clearly unfinished and shoved out the door. Whether this is Embracer's fault is up for debate, although I think a game that's been in development for 3-4 years should probably be a lot better than Graven is. Slipgate/Interceptor has a bad track record with games and my hopes that they would do better with Phantom Fury are almost entirely crushed by the news from yesterday that Phantom Fury is releasing in about a month. It's time to rip the band-aid off. Like I said, this isn't a drama channel, and it brings me no joy to poop all over these releases.

Ok, maybe a little bit with Graven.
