Hello friends,

And welcome to another by request song tutorial. In today's lesson I'll be breaking down my approach to Ray Charles's 1961 classic "Hard Times" from his Genius Sings the Blues record. This tune has one main section that features some very jazzy chord changes. I'll explain how to strum through these chords, and how to include advanced techniques for transitioning between them. Let's get started!

My favorite so far because of the jazz chords and heart-felt song. Very polished, professionally done lesson. So good I had to join Patreon to thank the artist. What a great voice on this song too. Cheers.

Rob, you're killin' it man, fantastic! You are definitely locked into the genius of brother Ray. Love all of your covers of his tunes.

Thanks Jeff! His stuff is particularly fun to play because there is so much room for experimentation, converting piano ideas to the fretboard. Also Ray could really belt, so it's always an opportunity for me to howl to the best of my abilities.

This is a song I've wanted to try on guitar for ages, but I never got around to arranging it. You beat me to it! Nice work!

Great! Thank you!

Thank Ed! This one really pushes me in the vocal department. There are some incredible covers of this tune on the tube that have really inspired me to work on my vocal licks and runs.

Rob, would it be possible to have you transcribe a song for me? I'd be willing to pay you for it, Thanks, Justin wuerc932athotmaildotcom

Whether or not I would have the time to complete it would depend on the song. What did you have in mind?

This is a great lesson. I have been trying to find a good Hard Times lesson and I found this on Youtube. I then went to your site here and listened to a couple of others and I joined right away. You are a very good teacher and thanks for doing this. It makes thinks easier for us guitar players who just don't have to time, or ability, to figure all this out but enjoy playing and sounding good.
