Hello friends,

Wow, has it been another challenging week! Here in Philadelphia we've been faced with severe civil unrest, while the majority of city's peaceful protesters and police work to establish common ground. As someone who was raised in the Quaker faith, I love seeing my friends and neighbors exercise their 1st amendment rights, and use the power of non-violent resistance to stand up for causes they believe in. 

As if Covid19 and civil unrest wasn't enough, mother nature decided to to flex her impetuous will as storms rushed through the city, downing trees and resulting in a black out that left me without power for the better part of two days.

Finally, peace has washed over the city of brotherly love and I'm happily back to work on a complete lesson breaking down the Paul Simon masterpiece "American Tune." As I put the finishing touches on the instructional segments, please enjoy my demonstration and attached PDF tablature.

I deleted my comment because I thought other people were able to learn the song just from watching you play it where as I love when you break it down line by line. Sorry, I didn't see your response before I deleted my comment. I love this song and have been listening to it nonstop so I can know it well as I begin to learn it. Thank you so much for all you do. I love your work.

Why do you say b flat and not a sharp? It is the same note , correct?

Hey Keith, it is the same note, and generally the names are interchangeable. That said, when you’re speaking about specific keys or using musical notation, it’s appropriate to assign the name in such a way that there is not any repeating lettered note names in a key. For example, D# is in the key of E, not Eb.

I see. I knew there was a reason. I learned open chords in HS. Didn't play any for over 40 years. I'm 61 now and retired. The resources are so much more now. I'm learning about music theory. The reason for my question. You are a great teacher and I love your voice.

Robb, lots of work to break this one down! I am a learner. In bar 19 isn’t that Cadd10? How so 11? Even when I okay it out on piano it comes out add10...no? Love your lessons!
