Hello friends,

welcome back to Swift Guitar Lessons for another by request song tutorial. In today's session I've broken down how to play Neil Young's 1972 classic "Needle and the Damage Done." In this lesson you'll learn how to play Neil's instrumental cross picking techniques, before tackling basic strumming and lead techniques for the verse sections. Let's get started!

P.S I want to take a moment to thank you all for the continued support. With the uncertainty and anxiety surrounding the covid-19 pandemic, I feel extremely fortunate in knowing that, thanks to each of you, I will be able to continue my work and make ends meet. From Natalia, and myself, thank you so very much! -Rob

What a great find for me in the corona world. Would you mind creating a lesson for the song "If I Could Only Fly" (Blaze Foley Cover). Thanks. Cason McKee did a beautiful version.

Great song, although like Neil, a little hard to figure out..."Milk blood to keep from running out"? Explain that line.

It's when your pull your own blood out after doing a dose of heroin to save for later for a bump later, or taking it from someone else.... Dead or alive....

Christiffer

That is such a good version! Holy cow, i love this song. Thanks ROB

So, this is where i get frustrated. It feels impossible to get the intro down. Also for Randy, that line refers to when you shoot up heroin, you pull back a little blood into the syringe to know you are in the vein, then push the drug, hence milk blood. Dont ask why I know that :)

A terrific lesson, Rob, and the pdf is terrific. I'm very interested in how melodies appear in the strumming pattern and especially the source of fills. Maybe that's for another time. Thanks, as always.

Is there any cunning secret to hitting the right strings. I know that we're encouraged to hit a couple of strings in this but I still have a lot of trouble hitting the right ones... It always sounds terribly messy...

Hey Stephen, the only way to develop picking accuracy is slow, patient, and careful repetition. Most players practice in an endless loop of sloppy repetitions, thinking that eventually it will clean itself up... that method leads to frustration and bad habits. So slow things down, and make sure that every repetition is perfect as you gradually increase the tempo. I also recommend “chunking,” or fully mastering one small bit at a time.

"Most players practice in an endless loop of sloppy repetitions, thinking that eventually it will clean itself up" I stand guilty as charged! I'll adopt the chunking slowly approach...

Thanks! One of my favorite Neil Young songs

Rob great lesson. I’m almost at the point where I can play along. Are there any versions you could recommend? There are so many out there. Thanks.
