welcome back to Swiftlessons for another by request song tutorial. In today's lesson I'll be breaking down an old spiritual from the 1860's entitled "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." This piece of American music history has been performed in countless ways, but today I'll be breaking down my own arrangement featuring some percussive fingerstyle techniques. Let's get started!

Love the percussive fingerstyle technique on this one. Now, singing while playing is another story. 😉

Thanks Luisa, my favorite versions of this tune are those that really groove, so this is my best imitation of that. In regards to playing while singing, it's the same old story, a few hundred repetitions over the course of several practice sessions, then you can start peppering in the vocal part. One trick that I have found success with is singing the first part of each phrase just to get started, or singing the words that fall on the numbered beats. Of course, once you start adding in the singing, you need to drop the tempo to about half speed and work your way back up to tempo.
