Hello friends,

and welcome to another by request song tutorial. In today's session I'm joined by singer Caroline Kane for a demonstration and complete breakdown of Joni Mitchell's 1970 classic "Big Yellow Taxi. This tune features a basic 1.4.5 chord progression performed in DADF#AD tuning, and a variety of percussive strumming options. I'll take you through the tunes iconic intro riff, before breaking down the chord shapes and rhythms for the verse and chorus sections. Let's get started!

Note: Tab updated to reflect open tunings on Sept. 6th.

Man, I love this song! Rob, you’ve got it down and Caroline, you sound so wonderful singing it! Great tune and great lesson. I remember the first time I heard this and how hard it was to figure out what Jonie was playing, never really did until I saw her on TV and played it like she did and tuned to her fingerings to get it to sound right. Sure wish you had been around in the 70’s Rob...

Hello friends, I've added a new PDF study guide for this lesson. Let me know if you have any questions. Enjoy! -Rob

Thanks again Rob. You keep choosing songs I've always wanted to play. I agree with Buddy, I could never figure out how Joni got the sound. Never heard of alternate tunings till yeas later.

Hi Rob. Impressive stuff. What a great song. I'm a little confused by the tuning, though. You say in the video that it is "DAD F#AD" tuning, but above you have DAF#DAD. I assume the video is right, as that would be much easier to tune to (down a step, no change, no change, down a half-step, down a step, down a step). Thanks for all that you do!

Hey Bill, yes, the video is correct and my comment above was a typo. I also see that I forgot to reflect the open tuning in my tablature, I'll try to fix that as well.

Hey thanks for the positive feedback on this lesson Buddy. Caroline is always fun to jam with, and I plan to have her back to do some jazz, probably "All of Me."

sounds just like her! I was totally waiting for the laugh at the end ;-( well done!

Hey Roscoe, thanks for the positive feedback, I'm hoping to have Caroline back on soon.
