Hello friends,

And welcome to another lick of the week! In today’s session I’ll be breaking down a progressive blues lick that takes you from Amaj to Dmaj and can be applied to any major 1-4 transition. The lick mainly utilizes notes from the major and minor pentatonic scales, while including a tension note outside of those common positions. Let’s get started!

Section #1: Our Source Scales

In this section we’ll review our major and minor pentatonic scales. These two patterns are useful for blues and rock improvisation, and are frequently used in tandem.

Section #2: Progressive 1-4 Blues Lick

With your source scales firmly committed to memory, let’s put them to work with this advanced transition lick! When learning advanced phrases, it’s best to break it up into small bits, being sure to count as you proceed through the measure. Practice with slow, patient, and careful repetitions.

Cool lick and lesson again! I somehow never thought about playing the A7 shuffle at the 5th fret. So a great aha moment. Going forward, would you consider a lesson where you take a 1.4.5 progression in maybe C or G, and show us how to extract several different melodies with various rhythms? It would help the songwriting. Thanks for giving us so much!
