Hello friends,

And welcome to another By Request Song Tutorial. In today's session I'm revisiting The Beatles 1965 classic "In My Life." This tutorial breaks down how to play the tunes iconic intro, and the chord progressions and strumming patterns for the verse's A and B sections. This simple but recognizable song is perfect for players looking to improve their rhythm technique by mixing percussive elements into common strumming patterns. Let's get started!

Note: I've been receiving tons of messages regarding how to find specific post here on Patreon. While the platform does lack a much needed search bar, I have organized each lesson by tag, allowing you to narrow your searches by genre, subject, and artist on the post page. Additionally, the corresponding Patreon link is included in the description on YouTube, which does have a search bar. I strongly recommend that you use bookmarks to save your favorite post for future reference. Enjoy your practice!

Worth the waiting. Thanks! Too bad that this song has that dreaded B chord. Strange how I can do the other barre chords easily, but B has always been a struggle.

swiftlessons

Not unusual to struggle with the B barre chord. As a go around, you can ditch the barre and fret the high E string only, strumming from the D string down.

This is one my favorite song, thanks Rob for teaching.

Another red hot lesson, Rob. These Beatles songs have so much in them, even though they sound so simple. This is the first time I've seen a "strumming lesson" without a pick. Any tips there? When you pick the two notes for the A/G which strings are you plucking. I couldn't see it that well. Thanks for another class A lesson!

Hey Prithvi, my pleasure, this has always been one of my favorite John songs, always makes me think of my family growing up. Just got a request for "And I love Her," so that might be next.

Hey Dawn, thanks, glad you're excited for this one. Strumming without a pick requires a lot of sensitivity. The way in which you strike the strings, and the area of the fingers that makes contact can change the sound a great deal. My suggestion is to be gentle, and allow the tips of the fingers to lightly brush against the strings. You can create a bright tone with the fingernails, and warm tone with the pads.

Really learning a ton from the lessons, and still discovering your older lessons, as I am advancing one thing your lessons really help with is, if you can, include ( as you do on some) Beats per minute (BPM) when possible. I am just starting to practice with a metronome and stress about finding the right speed myself
