Great tips, Rob, as always. I'm generally at home writing lyrics as writing is in my wheelhouse. The challenge for me is aligning the rhythm to the lyric since the words themselves have their own meter which may or may not exactly match the rhythm. I hope that made sense! But I know that you'll clear this up for me in later installments! Gosh, I love this stuff.

Thanks for the reminder Dawn. I always write the melody first, with each note becoming a syllable. The next songwriting lesson will demonstrate my process of writing a complete song, and I’ll focus on that subject.

Good intro to poetry, Rob. I taught English in Middle and High School for 20+ years. Considering how little time you have in a video, you've give a concise instruction. Thanks. I second Dawn's comment that fitting the meter is a challenge, and yet the nice thing about song writing (as opposed to poetry with proscribed meters) is that sounds can be fudged a bit - and sometimes that creates even more tension. (Think Jason Mraz or Brandon Jenner.)

Hey David, so glad you're digging this video. I'm not formally taught in this area, so it's a relief that you approve. Also, I agree, there is some leeway in music that doesn't exist in spoken poetry, like the ability to double time, or stretch a syllable. That said, I almost always have to sacrifice my preferred wording for what works rhythmically, or sounds good musically.

Hey Rob, I've been wanting to write my own songs since I started the process of learning the guitar about 6 years ago and these lessons have been extremely helpful. I actually just finished my first song tonight and it felt amazing!

David, so nice to hear from another former English teacher here. Thanks for your shout out. I am so impressed by Rob's teaching and the extraordinary effort he makes for us. You and I know how much time this takes. As Rob says, Happy Pickin'.

Hey thanks for letting me know, that's fantastic news! I'd love to hear it when you're ready!

Hey Rob, awesome lesson, you bring it down in simple and easy to understand steps. I have written two songs couple of years ago and whilst I had the story and trying to capture the emotion, having the chords progressions that align with the story I did not really understand till now . I am going to use your tips and see what I come up with!!
