Hello friends,

For your weekend blues practice, I invite you to revisit my lesson on Brownie McGhee's 1966 classic "Born and Livin' with the Blues." I've created a PDF study guide complete with a chord sheet, diagrams and tabs to help you master this iconic tune. Let's get started!

Note: This is a simplified version intended for intermediate players. Brownie's live performances are full of advanced flourishes, and variations to the techniques discussed in this tutorial. In the near future, you can expect a follow up lesson revealing more of Brownie's unique style.

Thank you Rob, one day I hope to be able to play a few Brownie songs reasonably. One of them would be Walk on. Even it comes across as basic, there s a lot more going on there than the basic shuffle.

You're very welcome Tjeerd, I too hope to get back to learning some more of Brownie's tunes. He really was a master!

This song I first heard in Grenoble France 1966...I too thought this to be best Blues song ever heard...along with Sonny Terry playing the harmonica...Looked for years ..not on his albums.. I did not have the skills to play this...found it several years ago.. A similar version I am living with the Blues. Back in England Mick Jagger once asked me if I could play Chuck Berry.. In those days guitar talent was scarce...I couldn't play Jack Thwoof... So I am having fun at advanced learning dormant many years....When I grow up I'm only 76...I want to be a Rock Starr..."getting there" is a lot of fun..

Hey Tomas, so glad you’re taking advantage of this lesson. Teaching this tune was such a pleasure. Let me know if you have any recommendations on other McGhee songs I can teach.

Brownie admitted that "Going to Move to Kansas City" is his seminal song...It's great ..It's on U tube...Brownie part..1...As a professional You could probably pick this up no time.. and share it …..His left hand finger movements...alternate on the treble strings.. Never seems to play a chord...I guess just E..A..B...alternating fingers. .I'd love to learn that...My friends in Thailand and Indonesia as an American would go crazy if I could play that..Doesn't seem yto difficult

Thanks! I love the Delta sound but the steady thumb bass is out of my sphere right now but the shuffle mix, etc. really fits. Brownie is great! Thanks for the tab!

I really enjoy your Blues lessons that show a complete song. I am from Mississippi and have heard many great Blues songs but I now have a new favorite, (It will take awhile getting this one down!), Thanks Rob for the great lesson. Bryan

Hey, Rob, this lesson made my day. I love the Brownie shuffle element which adds so much to the rhythm. Can't get enough of the blues and this one is awesome.

like having the option to play barres or open chords. His turnaround adds some spice to the classic sequence. Tough stretch for the pinkie in the Brownie shuffle. I tried cheating by sliding my ring up to the fifth. Can't get enough of the blues. I greatly appreciate the theory addendums. Thanks Rob.

Hey John, a lot of players perform there extended shuffle this way, it’s legit haha. Glad you’re enjoying the blues as much as I am. Expect another blues classic in the near future. Thanks!
