Hello friends,

Today I'm celebrating the music of the recently deceased Tom Petty with a tutorial on his 1994 classic "Wildflowers." Tom's music has had a massive influence on my life, and with a career that lasted more than forty years, I'm sure that his tunes have shaped many of your memories as well. I'll get started by breaking down the intro riff, which will reveal the techniques utilized in the chorus and verse sections. From there, I'll take you through the instrumental bridge to get this tune performance ready. Let's get started!

This particular song brings back memories of skiing in Snowbird Utah. A blinding blizzard with powder above my knees with nobody in front of me or behind me where I can see a personr Nothing but love and enjoyment. Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention and to the viewers this. Wonderful soul and a wonderful musician and songwriter. He will be sadly missed.

Such a long career,I’m sure many people can think back to some memories that include his music. By the way Barry, I use iMovie to create these videos.

Thanks so much, Rob! In some ways the song seems simple, but in other ways it sounds so just like Tom Petty. And Barry, your skiing in powder brought back memories of Taos, in Northern New Mexico. I loved being one of the first people up the lift. Then I would ski down right under the lift in all the new "virgin" powder. So much fun!!

Rob - as you have time, it would be great to feature some more Tom Petty song lessons. I'm saddened by his passing, and would really love to learn more of his amazing songs. Thanks.

Hey Pete, I definitely will be posting some more Petty, perhaps “The Waiting” will be in the near future. It’s always hard saying goodbye to our heroes, and his passing has shaken me especially hard. Chris Cornell was another huge loss that I’m still trying to get over.

Thanks for this! I was searching the web for a tutorial on this song a few months ago, and kept thinking “I wish Rob had a tutorial!” Can’t Wait to learn.

I was actually planning to teach a whole Tom Petty series before I learned of his passing. I'm still going to be working on that, so let me know what you're favorites are, preferably ones that haven't been taught on YouTube already. Thanks Kelsey.

Just joined up here and as I posted on Youtube can't think of Tom Petty without thinking of 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High'. TP will be missed as for so many of us, as Rob noted in this video, his music became part of the soundtrack of our lives.

I would kill for a tutorial on ‘Walls.’ https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=D9skUDL4tLI Especially this amazing acoustic version of the song! :)

Love this - saw him in Hyde park earlier this year with stevie nicks, he looked in good shape can't believe he's gone so soon!

Wow... super lesson. Played just like the man himself and very clearly explained and demonstrated. Just found you through this tutorial/lesson and I have to ask myself “Why have I not seen this guy around before in my endless hunt for solid guitar education?” Better late than never! More Tom Petty, please. Perhaps more from the Wildflowers album, like ‘Crawling Back to You’? Would love to be able to translate Benmont’s beatuful piano into guitar.
