TWA Character Designs: Clio (Patreon)

Hey y'all! For this character post we'd like to go the character design process for Clio, from The Waters Above!

Clio is fun-loving character who is impulsive and energetic and sometimes, as a consequence of all those, liable to misinterpret things and can be somewhat quick to anger. She's a lot more active than Maera and we wanted to make sure she came across as messy and carefree.

I haven't looked at these in a long time, and it's kind of strange to look at, but I think we absolutely made the right decision here going with number 5. Not just because the adorable detail of the hairclips (which goes so well with the hood Namie designed) but just because it's so fitting. However, we did get the designs very early in the process, before we even had a final outline, let alone any script done, so it's safe to say that Namie's designs themselves had a lot of influence on the way she developed.

Here are the first outfit designs Namie sent us, and looking at them, I'm surprised at just how much clothing she's wearing. We really stripped all the layers off her. Even the one we decided on, A, has been cut down significantly.

And here are the final outfit designs for Clio! This is  extremely close to her final version and we homed in on pretty much exactly what we were looking for! She has a real talent for that and considering this was the first time I'd really gone through the design process, I'm sure I was clumsy and a pain to work with. But Namie she really is such an amazing talent!
