What makes Big Mom such a compelling character for me is her multifaceted nature. She can be ruthless and terrifying one moment, or show some vulnerability and humanity the next. You never really know what to expect from her. Her waking up and not remembering who she is (that she's a pirate queen and a powerful Emporer, whose crew is composed mostly of her own kids), it seems like it reverts her back to how she was when we see her as a child. And even as an adult she still has those moments of childlike behavior. Some theories believe she has split personalities, one of them being Mother Caramel (they believe her soul may have merged with Lin Lin's when she ate her, and it created Big Mom as we know her now). It's actually a pretty interesting one to look into if you're up to date on the series.

BM is such an underrated character. Shocking to say this about an Emperor. But most Battle Shonen viewers care only about how cool a character is, how powerful they are, and how few Ls they can possibly take. And because of her goofy side, people shit on her. To some extent this also applies to BB, for similar reasons.

Keep in mind big mom has a lifelong history of amnesia. she doesn't remember anything from any of her hunger pang attacks, just like she doesn't remember eating mother caramel and all of her friends on her 6th birthday party, or killing the giant cheiftan.
