He did definitely try and fight, he was just too weak and worried about his hand murdering the thugs. None of what was shown in the episode made him seem at all like a coward. He confronted a group of people that might beat the shit out of him or kill him twice to help someone and you say that isnt courageous? We all wanted him to beat the shit out of them with Migi, but he thought it would be best not to since he was worried about one of his attacks being fatal. Again, he just didnt want to kill. If you think that makes him a coward, you might want to google the definition.

Sometimes characters are written to have flaws like being cowardly early on, so it's easier for the audience to see the changes in the character as the show goes further on. This will happen with Shinichi, so be patient

no character has to show some true courage like jaegar, uzumaki, etc. he was never ''badass'' in my opinion he was always soft and it frustrated me. that's why after i finished the anime i couldn't go back to watch it again

Thing is, Uzumaki and Jaeger were trained and prepared for YEARS specifically to handle their respective challenges. Shinichi was just a normal guy living his quiet high school life and was thrusted into this chaos. You can’t expect the same level of mental fortitude

uzumaki wasn't trained at the beginning of the show and still met challenges head on cause of his tenacity and strong will. and neither was jaegar at one point as a matter he's a total opposite of shinichi he actually fought back against bullies
