What about Erza being poisoned? Did that work for you?

Her getting poisoned was very valid, from how she got poisoned and why it took her out of the fray. Especially once you find out why later on. I’ve seen way worst plot situations where strong characters are taken out of the battle to give the other characters shine. For example, In JJK, in order to let the other characters shine they always claim that Gojo is out on a far away mission so he can’t help. So it was pretty solid tbh, we got to see the other characters abilities and a lil story, we got to understand who and what Wendy is and can do. And it helped bring the team together by giving them a collective goal that unintentionally brought them togther and build teamwork.

And to top it off builds tensions for when she more than likely will recover and re-join the team in the field.

The way Erza was taken out of commission was handled pretty well I’d say. She put in the most work in the last fight and got triple teamed. So it didn’t jeopardize her status as an S-Class Wizard by making her look weak. Plus we have the active goal of getting her healed up. Rather than just letting it happen. And Natsu’s already running on his way back with Wendy, so it’s not dragged out either. The minute he gets back, there you go. And yeah it definitely already serves a purpose in getting the Alliance to start acting like a team now as Hibiki.
