CONTAINS SPOILERS That's highly debatable. Kumi' perspective is similar to Ippo' mom, but Kumi has a brother that's a boxer and is a nurse. Ippo' mom has never watched one of Ippo' matches: She's blindly letting him do his thing. To me, Ippo is pretty likely to reject Kumi, because she's become a symbol of his health and voice of reason - but Ippo' way might be to reject both to reach for his final goal. OR he'll find his own way to capture both - but I think the point of the entire story is that taking that STEP(Ippo = step) is a point of no return. That step is the difference between Takamura and Date - why one is on a lonely path with a goal set only for himself, and the other a happy man with wife and kid. It's the step that separates humans from monsters - and I think the author' final message will be that while Ippo might end up reaching his final goal, he's lost something much more important along the way.

That really is the only thing holding back Ippo at the point he's at in the manga. I honestly can't see Ippo making that sacrifice because he's not the type to discard something in order to get ahead. I think the author is showing us that while a monster has what it takes to get to the next level if you take it one step at a time then even if it takes you a long time you'll eventually reach that point where monsters are.

It's def gonna be Kumi, and im also a manga reader. It isn't surprising, it is shown in the anime. Kumi doesn't fuck with boxing 100%, she has more of a modern view on it. Which is understandable as a nurse. This isn't a spoiler cuz she has been like this with Mashiba and told ippo S1. She is like a grounder for ippo, reminding him that boxing CAN fuck you up.

@Panda I know it's more than likely going to be Kumi and it makes sense from her perspective why she wouldn't want Ippo boxing like that but if there was a part of him that wants to box I would say at least encourage him if she cared about what he wants
