The humour really improves dramatically over the course of the seasons! The earliest part 1 of season was written in ~88 iirc. So a lot of the jokes and writing is really dated. Like the "black people are naturally stronger" comments early in season 1. While Hajime no Ippo is fundamentally very formulaic, the incredible progression between seasons in both art, style, humor, writing etc. is incredible to experience.
