Even if Joel say's that the story let Date hit Ricardo that still mean Date is good enough to break Ricardo's guard while also landing a punch on his face, it takes nothing away from Ricardo because we've seen what he can do but it does let us see that Date got to the world before and now he's back but better.

I think they forgot that Date is ranked 1 in the world right now just right behind Ricardo. They only think about how Date was in the Ippo fight but he leveled up tremendously to get that rank 1 spot. It would be weird if he couldn't get at least 1 punch in on him.

In fact, Date is a world-class player, which is why he was able to challenge Ricardo for the second time, and the duel with Ippo was Date's adjustment period for the World Championship, he's not in his best condition.
