If I'm a trainer and my boxer gets knocked down standing up then gets knocked down again after that I'm throwing the towel 9/10 times. Wellz saying boxers gets concussions is true but that doesn't mean you should allow your boxer to get to that point if it looks like they can't fight back.

In real life this fight would have been stop at round 3 at the most. There is one point that Volg threw punches for like 30 seconds uncontested and Ippo didn't fought back for that entire time. Also, if your trainer has to help you to walk back into your corner the match is over, a doctor would have stop the match. This fight takes place in the early 90's, so is not as bad as Ali's time.

These guys gotta realise that hajimo no ippo is set in the early 1990's so the refs weren't as strict as they are in today's boxing fights.

So the manga started in 1989, the fights so far are all from 1991-1992. Anime didn't start airing until 2000.
