Michael acts stupid in general but he has 15 years of business and paper experience so he knows what the customers want to hear.

When The Office was first cast in the US, Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais, creators of the original British version, urged the writers of the American series to make sure that Michael had to have his moments where you do root for him and that that’s the key to his character. He can be a huge idiot and jackass, but they have to let him have his occasional wins. Moments like him being the only one there for Pam’s art show and here where he bests Dwight are some of those precise moments. Just wait to see what’s coming in the next couple of episodes.
