Shane tried to sacrifice himself but Otis wouldn't let him, so he had no choice. He could not let Carl die for them.

Wow, y'all missed the point of what Shane did. Shane would've given his life for Carl and Laurie. So when he knew they wouldn't make it, he tried to make Otis go ahead. Otis wouldn't go, which meant if Shane got caught Otis would've gotten caught and Carl would have died. Shane was not about to let Carl die. So he had no choice. That was the only decision because they both weren't going to make it.

I agree with wells on this. If my homie Son get shot and Me and some rando dude gotta go get supplies to save His son, and it comes down to a situation where we both not living and the rando guy refuses to go without Me, I will absolutely shoot him and leave him for dead to save my homie son cause at the end of the day we in survival mode. And your life is not more valuable to me than my homies son(who you happened to have shot and put his life in immediate danger anyway)
