If we look at this from Aang's point of view, his people and entire culture/way of life were wiped out and forgotten. Appa was the only reminder and friend Aang had of the air nomads before it was destroyed. I get that he's the avatar, but we have to take into account that he's only 12 years old.

I think this basically applies to anyone regardless of age. If someone like Aang lost their entire people and culture to genocide and then now not only lost their longest and closest friend and family, but the last thing connected to their past and people, then they basically just lost everything at this point. To say they would feel angry and devastated would not be enough to describe how that person may be feeling.
