Toph actually has her own unique martial arts style, Southern Praying Mantis. I'm pretty sure she's the only character in the show who was given her own style.

The Fire Nation was only good because of the comet. They are not the strongest most destructive maybe, the comet allowed them the power to basically nuke other nations back to the bronze age. Due to this the fire nation became more advanced at the expense of the surviving nations.
