Hey guys,

both Legend of Korra s04e12 and Attack on Titan s03e06 are now in the folders.

I won't be able to record the final episode of Korra before Friday as I have an exam on Friday that I have to take so this week's mostly about preparing for it, then next weekend I'll catch up for sure and upload it :) I'm a bit sad that we barely got any korrasami scenes in these past episodes. I'm just not sure if this can be made up for in just one final episode that will probably have a lot of other stuff going on. But hey, there's always the comic books, right? Or so I was told. I might react to them if that makes sense somehow.

Then after next week I'll slowly start posting polls here and there and consider my next show. There's like 4-5 on my radar.

I hope you have a nice week,
Ola

I have always felt conflicted about Korrasami since it was IMO poorly developed but you can also see that this was the best that they were able to pass through Nickelodeon censorship. In general, LOK feels like such an uneven show with moments of absolute brilliancy combined with moments that make no sense at all. I'm sure you are aware of all the production issues that happened while making this show and I can never stop wondering what a masterpiece could have been created were the writers be given more creative freedom. But, well, at least it is not SpongeBob Squarepants. (BTW, I haven't been able to watch your LOK reactions since I'm still working through your Avatar series, sorry about that!) I have always been a big fan of animation as a medium and its ability to produce scenes that would be nearly impossible to create using live-action, but in the west it is still manly perceived as directed to kids which greatly restricts the kind of stories that are allowed to be told. Anime has somehow filled some of that craving but there are also a lot of shows that are clearly directed to horny Japanese teenagers which can be really off-putting at times. That is why stuff like the Spiderverse movies and Arcane (great reaction series btw!) feel like such a rush of fresh air for me. Wish you great success in your upcoming exam!

Regarding AOT 3x06, this is some of the stuff we learned/got confirmed in this episode: 1. The first flashback before the intro song is from Eren uncovering his father's memories. In those memories we can see Grisha attacking the royal family and eating Frieda Reiss. We can then see him injecting Eren with a syringe and turning him into a titan (in pretty much the same way that Ymir was initially made into a titan) and then letting Eren eat him. (It follows that Grisha can't be the Beast Titan since he is now confirmed dead and the Best Titan is pretty much alive. They do have similar designs which has mislead more than one reactor, lol.) 2. In this episode we also get pretty much confirmation that the only way to become a Titan Shifter is by becoming a Pure Titan and then eating another Titan Shifter. This is what Hange realized when Eren told her about the conversation between Ymir and Bertholdt in episode 2x10 and this is why Hange knew that Eren was about to be eaten. In that conversation Ymir asked Bertholdt if he resents her for eating his friend and not even remember it. Bertholdt answer was: "You probably didn't want to eat a human either." In other words, at some undisclosed time, Reiner, Bertholdt and Annie had to eat some Titan Shifters in order to become the Armored, Colossal and Female Titan, respectively. Summarizing: 2.1 Ymir became a Titan Shifter when she ate Reiner's friend Marcel. (It is never shown that Marcel was a Titan Shifter, but since he was hanging around Reiner, Bertholdt and Annie outside the walls, it is safe to assume that he was.) 2.2 Eren became a Titan Shifter after he ate his dad. 3. As you pointed out, Levi's squad is right outside the Reiss' chapel hoping to rescue Eren. Erwin is bringing a hole regiment with him to the same location but if they wait for him it will be too late to rescue Eren. Earlier in the season Erwin handed Hange a book with the history of the Reiss family and highlighted an incident that happen 5 years ago in the same day that Wall Maria fell: the destruction of the Reiss' chapel. Officially, the chapel was destroyed by thieves but, as Hange pointed out, destroying a whole chapel would be really hard unless Titans were involved. We now know that this Titan incident was Grisha attacking the Royal family. The reason they know that Eren is in the chapel is because they know about this incident even if they don't know all the details. 4. We also learned this episode that the Royal family has been in control of the Founding Titan, also known as "the Coordinate", for many generations. However, when Grisha ate Frieda he stole this power to himself and immediately passed it down to Eren. (We still don't know at this point why he did this, but this is what was shown to us at the beginning of the episode.) The Founding Titan is extremely powerful and among other things it can control Pure Titans (as shown by Eren in episode 2x12) and can erase and modify people's memories (as shown by the interaction between Historia and Frieda in this episode). The underlying theme moving this show forward is that everyone who knows about this power is trying to control it. As Reiner said in episodes 2x06 and 2x09 their mission was to retrieve "the Coordinate," Grisha attacked the royal family in order to get this power and Rod Reiss is now trying to manipulate Historia into eating Eren so that the royal family can get this power back. It is believed that the reason why the royal family was using a fake king was to deceive any intruders coming from the outside and in this way have an extra layer of protection. 5. It is also established in this episode that the royal family (through the Founding Titan) erased everyone's memories after they had built the walls and told everyone that humanity had perished outside of them. This was the theory that Erwin's dad had and the reason why he was killed. However, we know that there is people alive outside the walls since that's where Reiner, Berthold, Annie, Marcel and Ymir came from. We don't know how much Grisha knew about it but there should definitely be information about all of this hidden in the basement. In principle, we don't know at this point for how long the royal family has been in control of the Founding Titan, but in the end credits of season 2 we can see people from antiquity fighting titans (among some other imagery whose full meaning won't be revealed until deep in season 4). However the first episode of the show is called "To You, 2,000 Years From Now" which kind of gives it away. 6. The Ackerman clan was originally a family of warriors whose goal was to protect the king. However at some point during the 100 years after the walls were erected they turned against the royal family (along with the Oriental clan) and their decision to have humanity hiding inside the walls with titans outside of them. In his conversation with his grandpa Kenny mentions the "Branch Family" that has moved to Shiganshina; that is Mikasa's family. He also mentions that his sister got pregnant while working in a brothel in the underground. We know that Levi grew up in the underground and we know that he was raised by Kenny at some point so it is safe to assume that Kenny was talking about Levi in that scene. In other words, Kenny is Levi's uncle. Since the Ackerman family was most likely quite large at some point, we don't know the exact relation between Mikasa and Levi, except that they both belong to the Ackerman clan. As it is also mentioned in this episode, Ackermans with "awakened powers" are extremely strong. We have seen Mikasa throw around other kids (including Eren) as if it was nothing. It is more subtle but in scenes were we can see our guys carrying stuff Mikasa is always taking an unproportionate weight with her. In other words, her strength (and Levi's and Kenny's for that matter) is actually superhuman. 7. Yeah... let's not talk about that scene with Zachary... I think you got everything that needed to be get anyway, lol. However it is also revealed in this episode that Pixis knew that Zachary wanted to rebel against the nobles for quite a bit of time. Pixis was not really willing to take part in this coup d'etat until Erwin's gamble showed that the nobles had no intention of actually protecting humanity. I'm very excited to see your reaction to the next episode as it has a couple of scenes that I think you'll particularly like. Hope that you enjoy!

"I have always been a big fan of animation as a medium and its ability to produce scenes that would be nearly impossible to create using live-action" my thoughts exactly, in the past 2 years I have discovered animation as something so fresh to me with the creators, when given freedom, being able to present EXACTLY what they want without relying on the actors skills, production process etc. It's truly amazing and after years of being a major movies fan it feels so good to simply see something new. I agree with your LOK commentary. I thought that Korra and Asami were supposed to be at least strongly hinted, but the way I see the very final scene (already recorded, still yet to post), it was the creators' commentary on the problem - with Asami saying she'd like to see the spirits' world and them entering it, it feels like the writers telling us there's a whole thing they weren't able to show apart from the comic books. So overall it doesn't feel like it was properly built but I see they were so limited. Anyway, you phrase my thoughts exactly.
