[[This post contains a lot of animations exported as GIFS which could create playback problems. Please let me know if you have trouble viewing any of the attached GIFS]]

Aloha, everyone.  I hope you've had a GREAT summer!

For those who don't know, I started taking courses at a California-based animation school and took a new job as a Graphic Designer/ Video Editor and Multimedia Specialist, all at the same time. My 2D courses have been taught by a Disney animator and though the time difference has been brutal, I've learned SO much, seen so much behind-the-scenes stuff and had such a blast it's hardly felt like school. Along with anim school, my new job is investing in me to learn 3D modeling and animation. What does that mean for all of us? It means it's finally time we make a strong push into the scary and magical world of 2D and 3D animation.

*jazz hands*

You guys know I've wanted this for YEARS, and now I finally feel like I'm ready to jump off into the known-unknown. I'm not willing to show 90% of the work I've done under the Qalcove name, but I did do a few doodle animations in my..."free" time.

The past 12 weeks has confirmed that animation is NOT EASY, takes a TON of time, and can be very stress-inducing. Instead of labouring over one drawing, I gotta labour over tens to hundreds of drawings not including colouring and cleanup (linework). And you KNOW I hate cleanup.

But to me, seeing all the ideas I have in my head animated instead of as static images is sooo much more satisfying. This is the direction I want to go in - just full-on animations, storyboards and animatics.

Over the years I've spent drips of time on animation, but never really finished anything...

[The Eternal Flame project, trimmed. I'd actually like to give this a shot someday]

[Was watching Game Night and found this clip I felt I could animate. Never got anywhere past these doodles, but - again - would love to build this up]

For several reasons, I just couldn't devote the time or give up the money I'd lose by not taking commissions. But a lot has changed now. Illustrating has been a FANTASTIC adventure, but I really feel I could shine as an animator if I just gave myself a chance and learned to just be PATIENT. I'm still obviously an amateur, and probably will be for a few years, but I hope you'll support me as I continue to push myself and share with you what goes on in my noggin. Thank you for ALL your support thus far - I really couldn't have gotten here without you.

Please enjoy some of the other pieces I started on over the break; I tried staying away from illustrations as much as possible during my break, but I just couldn't help myself.

[WIP | I LOVE this piece. Planning to finish this and make prints for those interested :3]

[WIP | Potential February entry for the 2022 Wildehopps Calendar. I'd like to change the perspective now that I'm looking at it again...]

Next Update (Patrons only)

From comics and anims, to old projects and calendars, I've got ideas to spare. Help me curb my over-ambitiousness in the next post where I get your input on the cornucopia of projects I've started working on. I have 2 outstanding comms I must complete first, but once I'm done it'll be time to strap ourselves back in.

And I can't end this post without a complimentary doodle:

You know I love and appreciate all of your love and kindness and I couldn't be here without you. I hope my little artworks continue to help brighten your day!

So glad you're back, Qal!! It's so wonderful to see more of your work again and I can't wait to see the amazing new animations you're gonna produce! I especially love that WIP of Judy and Nick on the Vespa; looking forward to seeing that one fleshed out! Keep up the good work and keep taking care of yourself!

Welcome back Qalcove! Can't wait to see the work you make moving forward!

Congratulations, Qal, for being taught by an animator for Disney. And, let me tell you this: the road is hard but in the end, it is fulfilling. My daughter works for an animation company here in Canada and she worked real hard to learn the trade. There were ups and downs but what made it worthwhile in the end was that she interned during her last year for her current employer who, upon her graduation, immediately hired her. She's been with them for over five years and she loves her job there. She does put in long hours but it's because she wants to hand off flawless work. She's done work for Disney's Tangled TV series, and The Lion Guard, Netflix's Hilda Season 2 and just recently, was on the team that animated the premiere season of "Centaurworld". Here's the first episode, released by Netflix for free on YouTube: https://youtu.be/4qIulz32xJQ Keep up the great work!

Welcome back Qal! It's been quiet without you in the fandom, but it's alright. Seeing your personal sacrifices gain results must be very satisfying 😀 Love the new animations. You weren't kidding when you say a Disney animator was teaching you. I can definitely see that Disney touch on the first one. Also, I like that drawing with Nick and Judy in a scooter. Kinda has that Luca vibe, but in Pawaii 🙃

QALCOVE!!! *hugs* so glad to see you back! Been thinking about you and hoping you’ve been doing well!! Also, which Disney animator has been doing the teaching, if you are allowed to say?? I’m a particular fan of Glen Keane and Eric Goldberg

QALCOVE!!! Welcome back! *hugz* Looks like you had a great time, I'm happy for you. ^^ Also, had to add, the last doodle reminds me of the foxes from "Save a fox" (A fox rescue organization). Specifically Finnegan Fox. Looks like Nick, cackles like a hyena, has the attitude of Finnick.

So happy for you!!! Wishing you all the success in the world.

Good to have ya back Qalcove, and very nice bits of animation :) Also, I agree with Nick's shirt; where is Zootopia 2? What kind of cruel world do we live in where we get a sequel to Sing first?

Camosssssss! I hope the summer has been treating you well! My mentor is neither, but he worked with Glen and had great stories and little wisdoms from him that he shared with us. I'm gonna keep his name to myself, but he's worked on a ton of D films from 89-2007. Nice dude he is!

Luca is actually the direct inspiration for this piece XD Its been quiet? Prob cuz I'm the only one still making a stink about this movie in 2021 XD; hopefully Z+ will bring more [good and nice] folks next year! I still have a lot of work to do, but I'm excited for the future <3

I'm so happy you are back, Qal! 😊🧡 Just like Side already said, it has been quiet in a fandom since you started your hiatus! But now I can say that it was definitely worth it! You have made, and learnt so much in such a small time! 😮 I'm so proud of you! 🤗 And now I'm even more excited to see the amazing things you have been learning! Just like I've been saying (for years now 😄), there is an amazing future waiting for you, and you just took a BIG step forward in this journey! Now, let's make that idea tap flow, and see where it takes you this time! 😄
