Furuya is always a slow starter, if he gives up runs they're typically in the first inning, which is exactly what he did in this game. On the other hand Hongo started off strong and has stayed strong, which has given his team the advantage.

Crazy thing is Hongo doesn't need to be ticked off to be one of the best pitchers we have seen. As the coach himself said he is blessed by the baseball gods. High velocity, and nasty breaks on his pitches. You could work on those things, but Hongo just got it. The team goes through harsh training. Hongo called city folk pansies, because they don't train in the conditions that they do as far as he knows. The coach just being extra for no reason, and it doesn't do Hongo good when he can probably use a proper mentor. Honestly, I think if Hongo was on Seido from what I know He'll probbaly be better overall by this current time. Seido likely beats Inashiro too, and would've been champions in summer.

I did recommend you watch OVAs 4 and 5 which include some of Yakushis reaction to being invited along with some other great scenes that are manga canon lol. If you get the time and wanna watch them even just on your own they're a great watch. Also I totally agree with you about Hongos coach. Even though Hongo is an incredible pitcher on his own, the coach absolutely uses his temper and his frustration to make him better and more intimidating. It's a fucked up way to coach a kid. He's gonna have the worst associations with baseball moving forward.
