Looking back, Amelia's design actually involved comparatively few changes compared to other characters. This is surprising, since someone like Amelia would be important to get "right". I suppose our artist really got the right idea!

Of course, we already had something to go off with the small description about Amelia that's present in Angels with Scaly Wings' second scene for Remy. From that, we knew she was red, and also had some frills running down the back of her neck.

Given their shared backstory, we also know Amelia and Remy are considered to be the same species. That gave us a good starting point, but how similar do dragons of the same species really look?

Usually they share the same general shape and the same number of limbs and wings, but there can be some variations in regards to head shape, number and shape of horns, etc.

Indeed, the first sketch to me actually ended up looking too similar to Remy! Even the secondary features that can vary ended up being very close to Remy's design, with very similar horns and an ear like he does, but with the additional frill on the back of her neck.

I'm usually careful to try and not overload a character with features (less certainly can be more sometimes), so for me the challenge became to find the right balance between her horns and frills.

Here are some sketches we went through before we settled on the one you see here last.

The artist also wanted to try adding some accessories, although I ultimately decided against adding anything more to her.

After all that was done, the colors were also easily decided on, leading to Amelia as she is depicted in Angels with Broken Hearts.

Some people may actually see some resemblence between her and another character - Anna. Between her colors, the head shape and with both being scientists, seeing one may remind one of the other.

This was also intentional, since this also may have served as an unconscious reason for Remy to dislike Anna further throughout the events of Angels with Scaly Wings...
