Act 50

Mel

“No, my dear, it’s right–“ Mel began, turning their head around, only to find no brass serpent indeed where one should have been leaning against the table.

What?

The girl squeezed Mel’s hands more firmly and said, "Oh, no! Have you lost it on the way? Your beautiful cane... Let’s look for it; I’m sure the people in this village wouldn’t just take it, and— ah!”

Alarmed by Rosemary’s high pitched squeak, Mel looked back at her – and almost screeched themself.

From under their sleeve, just as thick as a thumb, something slowly slid from Mel to Rosemary’s hand:

a white snake.

You piece of trash, Mel tried to snap with their thoughts. Or perhaps it was Lusje saying it. It was hard to tell. However, even if they were Mel’s own thoughts, then, unless the demon was actively trying to read Mel’s mind, it wouldn't be able to hear them. Only Lusje was able to communicate via telepathy.

Remarkably, Rosemary didn’t flinch.

“Please excuse me,” Mel said as they tried to pull their hand back, intending to take the snake with them. Instead, the young woman held on, probably in worry about the faux animal’s sake.

“It’s okay, I’m not afraid. It’s the snake you use in some of your performances, right?”

"Yes, but I had no intention of letting it loose on you."

“It’s fine, really,” Rosemary insisted, “I’d like to hold it, if it’s okay.”

With a broad, almost cartoonish grin on its face, the snake turned to face Mel.

Mel wanted to insult it or maybe even full-force punch its stupid smiling snout.

Good thing that she explicitly consented to caressing an actual living being, huh, Mel?

The audacity!

The serpent turned back, now moving entirely along Rosemary's hand and forearm.

For the time being, Mel had no choice but to comply.

“It’s really adorable, even closer up. "Though I do have to say that I’m not a fan of you using a real animal on stage, let alone carrying it around with you like that,” their sweet Rosemary chastised them, on top of their already high emotions.

“I… I would agree with you there, Rozemarijntje; that’s why I don’t use elephants, rabbits, or even the magician’s typical favorite, doves.”

“Oh, wait—is that why you call me little dove?” Rosemary interrupted.

“But believe me, that snake can take it”, Mel continued, ignoring her query in an effort to salvage the entire situation.

“I find that hard to believe. She seems so delicate, and snakes usually just want to be left alone, right?”

“Not this one, most certainly.”

“Well then, I’ll believe you on that,” Rosemary promised, while watching the snake slowly slither up her arm with fascination.

The sadness and pain had faded from her face, at least.

“What’s her name?”

“It’s… it’s Lusje.”

“Hello, Lusje,” Rosemary greeted in the sweetest voice, with an even sweeter smile. Mel pursed their lips. “Nice to meet you. My name’s Mary.”

Then, looking back at Mel again, she added, “Do I have to do or pay attention to anything specific with her?”

Mel took a deep breath before answering, using the moment to curse the damned demon even further in their mind.

“No. It… it seems to like you. It probably just wants to hide in your hair and stay there,” Mel emphasized the last words not as an assumption, but as a command directed at the rogue demon, “Don’t worry about it biting you; it won’t.”

“I told you that it’s okay, I’m not worried about that,” Rosemary replied while gently stroking the swarming snake’s back with her thumb. After she was done, she said, “Okay, then, I’ll keep her on me while you sit back again. I told you that you shouldn’t watch.”

“I–”

Mel gritted their teeth as they saw the demon staring at them, and again it grinned as if mocking Mel for not being able to watch while it could.

Deep breaths, Mel. You can deal with Lusje later. All that mattered now was Rosemary’s peace-of-mind.

“Of course, my little dove. I’m… I’m looking forward to what you’ll conjure up.”
