Act 43

Mel

“I don’t fucking care what your name is, you sorry excuse for a worm; did you just bring a poor, possessed boy into my office!? I told that stupid cat that I won’t stand demons who do that--”

Mel wasn’t entirely sure, but it seemed as though Lusje shrank a little.

“No, no, I didn’t possess him– I mean, I did, for a minute, but that’s not our usual arrangement”

“I made a deal with Lusje,” Mel chimed in, hoping to clear things up.

The woman stared at Mel as if he just told her that he had sold half of his organs.

“Excuse me, you did what?” she asked.

“I-I mean… wait, I’m confused. Bastet said that you know about demons and what they do--”, he began.

“Exactly, I do,” she answered, “which is why I would never do such a stupid, dumb thing. Why are you even here, if you’ve already made a deal?!”

“‘Cause he refuses to do most of the dirty work that comes with the power, so we have to go the classic route: climbing up the ladder one spoke after another, which includes having an agent,” Lusje explained.

The woman massaged her temples.

“Why do I always pull the clowns,” she asked rhetorically.

Bastet really hadn’t lied when she mentioned that Morris was rough around the edges.

Bastet… He already missed her. Their first meeting was so much… quieter than this one.

“I’m not sure how we shall proceed, Mrs. Morris. Is there a chance that you’ll take us, or shall we leave?” he asked, trying to maintain a friendly, polite tone.

“That depends on how much you’re worth – or rather, your potential. I mean, you have a demon. So you most likely will be a golden boy. But let’s see.”

She drew close to him, grabbed his chin without asking, and turned it to the left and then the right, observing him like a stock animal she wanted to buy.

“How about you check the teeth, too? It’s how you see the true health condition of a slave,” Lusje commented.

Ignoring the demon coldly, Morris spoke, “State your name, age, and occupation.”

“Melchior Sharma, 21, Magician.”

“Stupid name. Tough profession, doesn't yield much. Can’t you do anything else?”

Ouch.

“I only want to be a magician, nothing else, Ma’am. May I show you–”

“No need. You have a demon, I know your work has potential. Alright, well, I guess you could make it with a lot of work, but not with that name. Do you have an alias?”

“No.”

“We’ll figure something out. What about your mole, can we have that removed?”

Mel put his fingers protectively over the little mole above his lips. It had never occurred to him that it might be an issue.

“Is it… bad?” he asked.

“Stop confusing my kid. It looks handsome on him.”

“Shut your mouth, tamed demon, not your turn. I’ll talk to you later.”

Now Mel was certain that Lusje was getting smaller. “I’m not tamed… just a little domesticated,” he heard the snake mumble, and almost had to laugh.

Instead, he bravely spoke up. “Excuse me, there’s a question that has been occupying my mind since you mentioned something. If you haven’t made a deal with a demon, nor are one yourself-- what are your relations to them?”

“I was liaised with one. That’s the only info you get on that. Let me make one thing clear: if I take you as a client, we won’t get personal. You’re after glory, I’m after money. I’m the best you can get, and I will get you connections, gigs, opportunities, and fame. That’s all. I don’t want to hear your tragic backstory or your dreams, I don’t want to go drinking with you, I don’t ever wanna hear you cry about the dark sides of showbiz or demon pacts, nor do I wanna hold your hand when you’re about to birth whatever the demon gave you for your powers. I only want to do my job and get paid. Understood?”

Tough words. But fair. Mel nodded in affirmation.

“Good. I will make sure to get you everything you need to become a star. And as I said – I’m the best. You can rely on that. As long as you’re bringing in cash, I will protect you and guide you through the hellhole of entertainment and demon business.

Let’s begin by coming up with a 1-year plan, some trademarks, and your new name.”

Author's comment: And with that, we're done with Book II! Next chapter will be back in the present again, but I will take a short break with posting until then. I hope you enjoyed the second book, I know it's way more dark and confrontational, and Mel is still just such a baby, but maybe you found it interesting! Book III will start off way more fluffy again and there will be a bit more plot.
At this point a BIG SHOUT OUT to my beta reader Try, who does such an amazing job polishing my English and suggesting words I'm lacking. It's insanely helpful. Thank you so much, love!!!

If you have any thoughts to share, ideas, feedback, whatever - Who is your favorite character? Who would you like to see more sketches of? What would you wish would happen, do you look for more specific content? I'm super grateful for any feedback! Melodie & co mean a lot to both Schpog and me, and it's so very nice for us to see when it reaches other people, too!! Gives us life, to be honest

Tired Pro

just like mel, I'm absolutely smitten with bastet, her presence was short but omg even mel is still thinking about her after a couple chapters 🫣 she's just so mysterious and flirtyyyy lol, best cat lady ❤️ lusje continues to be the sassiest danger noodle ever, he is so acerbic but his dialogue is so funny, and yet he still manages to be so respectful and decent!
