Act 41½ - Intermission

Mel

Mel left the apartment, walked down the hall, and took the lift; all in silence, without saying one word or making any noise. Only when he exited the complex and nobody else loomed nearby did he bend over, clutch his chest, and start to hyperventilate.

“Ya did good, kid.”

“Seriously?! That’s all you have to say?” he snapped and withdrew his sleeve to look at the snake, which had already merged with his arm again.

The tattoo had a startled look on its face.

“You could’ve at least warned me, my god. Why didn’t you say anything?”

“I am a demon?” Lusje answered, unsure, as if it was clear that it would explain everything.

“I could at least enter better prepared, or think of what to say or offer, or bring a gift--”

“Wait, wait, wait, hold up - You haven’t really fallen for her, have you?”

To answer, Mel gave him a frantic moan and kicked a can.

“Wow. Great. Thanks, Bast, for confusing my human even more,” Lusje commented, then calmly added, “Chill, dude. All’s good. These things happen when ya meet familiars.”

Mel gulped down some deep breaths to calm down. “Familiars?”

“Yeah. Or… like she said, demons ‘of your kind’. It’s a natural thing between humans and demons. Or, well, “gods”, how they see some of us. They feel that deep connection and inspiration. Why do ya think there’re so many intensely fanatic religious folk? Why some demons, excuse me, gods, have a whole ass temple, let alone several of ‘em?”

Mel hunched over again, but his breathing finally slowed down a little.

“Nothin’s wrong with ya, aight? Your connection made you devoted. Made ya lose identity and become a worshippin’ slave. Which can be nice at times, I admit - and I won’ tell ya that you shouldn’t meet her again. ’S up to you. But be aware of the effect, ok, kid? Use it, enjoy it. As long as you don’t forget who your real pact-holding demon is.”

“Okay… I think that makes sense… Sorry I lost my temper.”

“Don’t be. I didn’ know she’d have such an impact on you.”

“Thank you… for bringing me here, even though she killed you once.”

Lusje seemed a little flustered. “Ah, well, not worth mentionin’. Took me a couple hundred years, but I revived, so’s all good.”

Mel for sure wanted to ask follow up questions to that particular story, but he’d have save them for later.

“I… I liked how you both called me ‘them’. Sounded strange, but… it felt good, too.”

“That’s how you refer without gender. Didn’t ya know that?”

“I might have heard of it, but I probably never noticed that it referred to one person, singularly.”

“Well, now ya know. We usually don’ give a fuck about gender shit, but if ya’d like to explore I can switch my use of pronouns as often as you want. Now, let’s get ya home, fetch a nice snack an’ a cold shower. You need it. And if there’s still time let’s visit that Bente person, ‘kay?”

Mel straightened himself again, regaining his composure.

“Agreed. By the way, what was the stuff that you gave her?”

“Ah, that?” Lusje snickered, “Catnip.”
