Act 40

Mel

Bastet…? As in the Egyptian goddess? Mel didn’t know much of Egyptian mythology besides the basics: Osiris, Ra and the like. However, he had been fascinated by Bastet as a child; next to being the goddess of fertility, cats, women, sun, intoxicants, and music among other things, she also was the protector of secrets and most importantly: magic.

This woman, currently enshrouded in an aura of intense mystery and calm strength, stood as an epitome of fertility and unmeasurable beauty, with red eyes as piercing as Lusje’s. He didn’t doubt for a second that she was indeed Bastet, the goddess.

“It’s been a long, long time since I met such a devoted soul like you. You don’t really come across believers these days. Especially in a city like this.”

“This city even has a pyramid, though,” Mel said.

The comment summoned a laugh that sounded amused and pleased. He blushed from the feeling that he made her sound so joyful.

“Though … I fear that you must be mistaken. I am agnostic.”

She laughed even more, then lifted her hand and lovingly cupped his cheek.

“You really are the most peculiar child. You’re one of the few who know the truth about the existence of our kind, yet you see yourself as an atheist?”

He coughed, a little abashed. When she said it like that, his beliefs really did sound twisted.

“Not an atheist - I just think that I’ll never be able to even partially grasp god, time, space or any other impossible concepts… and I’m not part of any religion.”

Even as he said that, the longer he looked at her and the longer she touched him, the more the thought of worshiping her and only her crept into his mind.

“‘Tis not important, my sweet little human. You believe in wonder, in magic, in the power of the mind, in the importance of secrets: the virtue of entertainment. This is your religion, and it is mine, too. This is why you are of my kind.

But enough chit-chat.” She withdrew her hand, to his sorrow. “It is finally time to reveal what you seek of me.”

He suddenly felt incredibly crude. He has visited a goddess to misuse her like a set of yellow pages, basically.

“Ah, I see. Don’t feel bad about it, you didn’t know better.”

How did she -

Ah, right.

Of course she would be able to read his mind.

“I’ll try to refrain from doing that from now on. I like to be surprised myself, too, you know. So whom do you seek?”

He cleared his throat. “I, uhm, I’m looking for an agent. Someone who knows… of your existence.”

Her eyes seem to flash with curiosity.

“Oh? For what kind of business?”

“Magic.”

She laughed boastfully, her chuckles full of glee and satisfaction.

“I dearly hoped you’d say that. You’d be a perfect medium for that, I do believe, and I do have just the right, no, perfect person for you. A woman, rough around the edges, with a strong mind; I think that you’ll need someone like that. She knows of us well, and she’s one of your people.”

“My word,” Mel exclaimed, “That’s splendid. She really does sound perfect. Where can I find her?”

“Not so fast, child. I require payment.”

“Of… of course.”

Mel’s mouth became rapidly dry, a lump forming in his throat. He didn’t even ask how much, subconsciously aware that she wouldn’t accept dollar bills.

Her eyes fixated on his again, almost as if they threatened to take him hostage. “Make a deal with me. Become mine.”

Ah.

There it is.

He wasn’t too surprised; in fact, he was almost flattered that he was apparently such a desired object on the demon market.

Though, was it even possible to have a deal with two demons at the same time?

And even if - was a mere address worth selling his soul? At least Lusje had offered him the ability to become part of human history.

He certainly wouldn’t mind exchanging Lusje with her.

She reached out with her hand, offering it to him.

“What do you say?”

He slowly raised his hand.

Suddenly, the small snout of a white snake emerged from within his sleeve, coiling around his hand in such a way that a handshake couldn’t be made, and it looked at him as dumbfounded as a snake could.

“What in the fresh hell, you’re not actually, seriously considering shaking her hand, are ya, ya fuckin’ genius?”
