Act 28½ - Intermission

Mel

When Mel finally went to bed, things started to feel surreal again. All that happened, all that currently unveiled, all that will supposedly become - it just felt like a wild dream. It was impossible to grasp. Not only did he finally sleep in a warm bed again and had perspective, but also was now able to use actual, real magic, learned about the sheer existence of demons, had parasites feeding on his flesh or whatever inside him. He actually had forgotten that not even 24 hours ago he had tried to end it. And that he now had cruel certainty about how his parents felt about him.

The recollection hit him like a train, out of nowhere.

Just a moment ago he was full of overwrought excitement, but now it has lost all its positivity, and he was left overwhelmed in the worst way. Before he noticed, his face was wet with tears.

He wished so desperately to be with his mother, to share all of this with her. To listen to her bedtime stories, gently caressing his hair, stroking his back. Make him feel like he was safe.

“Sorry, kid. Won’t happen.”

Mel wasn’t even surprised about Lucifer's comment and didn’t care about drying off his tears.

“I told you not to read my mind.”

“I don’t even have to be a fucking mentalist to see what’s going on inside you, Mel.”

Pinkish and green neon lights fell through the small crack of the light proof curtains and hinted the shape of a giant snake in front of the bed. Mel didn’t know when Lucifer had left the skin on his arm, and as of right now, he couldn’t care less. He was lost in anxiety, pain, fear, thoughts. He needed to … actually, he didn’t know what he needed. He just knew that he was too drained to even talk with the demon any further.

The snake came a little closer, and to his surprise, addressed him in perfect, accent-free Dutch. “I know you don’t want to hear this, Mel, but you have to kill them. In your head, I mean. You are dead to them, so make them dead to you. The sooner you manage, the more you can focus on your own growth. This world is a fuckin’ trauma landfill, woven with chains of abuse. If you don’t cut off the chain, it will continue and thrive through you.”

The snake came closer, and Mel felt the mattress to his feet cave in. “That’s… weird, hearing this coming from the mouth of a literal demon.”

“Well, you are important to me. We are bonded by blood now. Of course I want you to get over it. At the very least for our deal’s sake. But I’ll let you in on a secret: We demons have feelings, too. And parasocial morals and all that shit. We just give that many fucks about empathy.”

“I … I don’t care about that right now,” Mel commented truthfully.

The snake's body now covered a good chunk of the bed, lying right next to Mel. It was warm and softer than he remembered. Mel couldn't help but to feel a little calmer.

“I know,” the snake said, still in Dutch. Its voice mixed well with his country's language, felt more gentle and familiar. “There’s nothing really I can say or do that makes you feel better now. These things take time. It’ll hurt like a bitch, again and again. But to your luck - and misfortune - you have a permanent companion stuck on your side from now on. So hey, at least you’ll never truly be lonely again.”

Mel swiped away his tears.

“That’s way more creepier to say than you think,” he said. “But… but I appreciate it nevertheless. Thank you, Lusje.”

He felt the warm body press against his’. And whether the demon did some conjuring to help him fall asleep or not - only a few deep breaths later he drifted off into the redeeming arms of a dreamless sleep.
