Act 16

Rosemary

The next time they met was at a little local funfair outside downtown. And despite it being only a few days later, Mary could already see changes in Melodie’s body; Her middle bulging out a little further than the last time.

Though this time it finally didn’t stress her out as much as in all the other meetups. Now Melodie knew about her fascination, and she not only tolerated it, but even let Mary come close. And even though Mary was still unnaturally excited about Melodie’s curve, it wasn’t as overwhelming anymore.

As always, she looked handsome and beautiful, and was wearing a suit with a bowtie in earthy tones (apparently she only wore black on stage), together with her top hat and that pretty snake cane, as per usual.

Goedendag!!” Mary exclaimed when seeing her, running towards her, her heart filled with joy.

Melodie was smiling brightly when she spotted Mary herself, walking up towards her, too.

When they met, Melodie gently held Mary’s shoulders, and she thought for a moment that Melodie would kiss her very casually on the mouth, when she bent down. But instead she kissed her on the cheeks, three times.

Ah, right - not only did the French greet like this sometimes, but Dutch people, too. Though only close ones, as far as Mary knew. She blushed.

“My little Rozemarijntje! I was so looking forward to see you again.”

“M-me too!” Mary said in delight, overwhelmed by warm and excited feelings.

“You’re a piece of art, as always.”

Mary blushed even harder.

“So are you, Miss Van de Sterren. Oh … is that alright…? Calling you Miss?”

The magician smiled warmly. “I’m happy to be a Miss for you. But thank you for asking, that was very considerate of you.”

“A-alright! But if that ever changes, please let me know, okay…?”

“Of course. Thank you, my little dove.”

“Oh - before we start, I have something for you.”

Melodie laughed. “What a coincidence, I have something for you, too.”

“Ah - uhm … shall we exchange our things at the same time, then? On three?”

The tall woman looked at her with so much warmth, as if Mary said things that fulfilled her.

“Yes, we shall do that.”

Mary grabbed in her little satchel, while Melodie did so with her trousers pocket.

“Ready?” Mary asked.

“Mhm.”

“On one, two… three!” And with that, she took out the little wrapped gift.

Melodie’s gift was packed in a piece of cloth and quite small, too. Since it wasn’t wrapped in paper, Mary could open it quicker than Melodie.

Inside the cloth - which turned out to be a delicate lace handkerchief - was a brooch, made of rhinestones, pearls, and embroidery. A delicate, beautifully crafted moth.

“It was made in the sixties, so it’s not new - but I hope you like it anyway?” Mel asked, as she very delicately unwrapped her own gift, as if she might use the paper again.

“I love it!” Mary said, eying the shiny little treasure in the sunlight. It’s so sweet that you remembered I love them!”  And indeed, it fit her style perfectly. She put it right on the collar of her blouse.

“That looks really adorable, like a tiny bow tie,” said Mel with a little smile, “Now, what do we have here…” She released her own gift from its decorative shell. It was a white-gold deck of cards.

The Joker and The Thief cards! Amazing. How did you know that I collect playing cards?”

Mary’s features went blank, and she felt her cheeks color slightly. “I mean… you are a magician.”

“Oh. Right. Of course,” Melodie responded, a little awkward, but smiling.

“I … I hope you don’t have them already?”

“I do. But that’s okay, it means that you have a good sense for what I like.”

“I mean… it should’ve been obvious, it’s a snake themed deck. But I will try again another time!”

“That’s the spirit, little dove. I’ll be looking forward to it. Now, shall we take a look around?”

Mary nodded enthusiastically and linked her arm with the one Melodie offered her.
