Brutal episode

What got me is when snafu didn’t let sledge turn.

I love the way this series show the brutal mindset of each man in dealing with the enemy, but we also see the humanity through Eugene's eyes. We also see the difference in Eugene in every episode we move forward in. Like Nikki said,.."the light leaving." To see Gunny like that was so painful. The Skipper "Ack Ack" going thru the pass, dead, is what I most remember about this series. I never forgot that scene. He was their moral compass; their hype-man, if you will. And a good leader. So sad. Snafu, looking out for Eugene, in his own little way, is awesome. Do you notice he's always sitting where Eugene sits. Always in the background when they're resting. Those guys haven't seen anything so beautiful (the nurses) in so long. Powerful! The guys leaving Jon to golf, and simply putting on their car lights so he can see, instead of asking him to come away, was so touching.

If you recall the conversation that Jake and Eugene were having while in their foxhole after their company XO was killed, Jake made the comment that Gunny Haney "was the old breed, and if they can break him then the rest of us dont stand a chance". The "old breed" is a common term in the Marine Corps when acknowledging prior Marines from past wars. So for them during that time, theyre referring back to the first World War when the lore and prestige of the Marine Corps really got established for the first time on a major scale. Marines earned the nickname "Devil Dogs" during WW1 from the Germans when Marines were killing German soldiers at ranges never experienced before, for example. I say that to put in context the weight of seeing Gunny Haney lose it after Lt Jones was killed and how that had a major effect on the Marines around him. Thats why they showed Gunny Haney in that moment, because hes looked up to just as much, if not more, than the Skipper or Lt Jones. Hes looked at as just this unbreakable machine of a Marine that can take anything, and then boom he loses all emotional control after seeing his XO killed. Even at the end there when he gives Sledge his zippo and tells him to keep it, you can see that the loses have finally took their tole on him and he just cant take anymore of it. Very powerful moment in this episode if you understand the story thats trying to be told there.

Did y'all notice that the actress who plays the movie star is Anna Torv (Tess in the Last of Us HBO)? She was only in the intro this episode, but thought it was cool.
