I've never realised this until now, but Flint talking about how Silver has never told his story could be interpreted in a meta-sense, considering how we've seen every other major character have their youth told to us in one way or another before this episode. I tested this and it seems the results check out: Before Flint's whole thing with Thomas and Miranda, we learned about his low upbringing and later how he was told a story about his grandfather who met a mysterious man, who's name was eventually taken for his own when he became a pirate. Before Vane's situation with Edward Teach, we knew he grew up a slave and was traumatised by his master. And Teach himself brought up the town he and his mother come from, and the omens they had with them. Jack comes from a line of textiles workers and was screwed over before he could take charge of the business, and eventually failed - which makes it easy to see why he is so concerned about his name and legacy. Anne was abused as a child bride constantly, to the point where her emotional maturity was stunted - which made it easy to see why she put on such a tough mask. We know about Max's story as a slave, with her father being a slave owner. We know Eleanor's story and how her mother died in the Rosario raids, and her sisterly relationship with Madi. Even Mr Scott, who was raised with Richard Guthrie and was eventually given the same education as him, leading to Scott teaching Eleanor. Almost everyone in this story has something from their past that actively drives them in the present in some way, but Silver just "is". He became leader of the pirates, came to love Madi, etc. but those things don't require something from the past, they're things he accepts. Just like he said, his backstory isn't important because he doesn't need it to define his life in anyway, he lives in the present more than any other character. And its why even though he wanted to kill Flint, it was just as easy for him to look past that and focus on his crew.

Have so many thoughts but the dominating one is I can not wait for 4x10! Watched a lot of reactions to a lot of shows but don't think I've ever been this excited for you guys to experience how this story ends. That Madi monologue reminded me of Flint's speech to the Maroons, just spine tingling. This show might have some of the best single scene characters ever from that Spanish sailor that Vane killed to the old man this ep. And yes, apologies to all other shows but no show uses flashbacks better than Black Sails. So interesting hearing Silver's non-backstory. Watching this the first time I was just like Nikki when Flint brought up the fact that we still don't know anything about Silver. Makes you wonder if his excuse of it being without relevance is even true. Or if John Silver is even his real name lol. But yes that final scene killed me too, love the juxtaposition between seeing the damage done to their friendship in this ep and then immediately hearing Silver reveal his true feelings about Flint for the first time which just multiplies the pain for us viewers. Oh and ps RIP Walrus. What adventures we had on that ship!

This episode is just amazing on so many levels. Joji’s sword fight with Flint had no music just the singing of the steel. The environment, dialogue, flashback, the twists and turns—-fantastic all around. I love the way they use sunlight, shadows and darkness to make a statement. The dialogue and actors are terrific but the way they use the environment is truly genius. I also like the bit of humor that is injected into the show (not in this episode but up until this point). I’m glad y’all have enjoyed this series so much and thank you profusely for allowing us to revisit the series with you. It is absolutely a show that ages well…I certainly enjoy introducing it to family and friends too. I’ll second the post above about The Last Kingdom - I enjoy that show tremendously!

I love that Silver's backstory is a mystery and that it is open to interpretation because we really don't know if he's telling the truth or not. Silver's story is meta from the outset because both the characters in this show and us the audience meet Silver at the same time and have to figure out who this guys is. Also can't remember who from the show said this but basically this show is Silver's backstory for Treasure Island. I just love that.

I think it was on a Fathoms Deep episode they discussed "past, present and future" characters. Flint is defined and driven by his past. Jack is always looking towards the future and his legacy. Vane was an entirely live in the moment person. And then there's Silver who might be a balance of all 3 to a point. He's clearly affected by his past but concentrates on the present in hopes of having a future. Also I always thought the line about "watching 2 points in space at one time" was a very meta one from the writers. They talked about the complexities of trying to finish this story in a way that suited their characters while also tying it in to "Treasure Island", i.e. watching 2 things at once.

So sad that you're almost done with Black Sails but The Last Kingdom has an Ubbe too, just sayin'... I've waited literally years for you guys to watch, would be awesome for you to catch up before the next/final season starts so you can watch live with everyone.

-Uba! Uba! Uba! Official pirate ship cat. -I think a big theme of this episode is realizing characters don't know others as well as they thought they did. That Rogers' vision of Eleanor is her knitting shows how little he really knew her vs. this ideal he had of her. Silver is choosing to not know the truth that Flint tells him about Madi -- she can't just let this war go. It's too much a part of her. And who is the real John Silver? Will we ever know? Personally I don't believe his real name even is John Silver. My pet theory is that it was the name of the real cook that our Silver killed in the pilot and assumed his identity. -Ben Gunn (an Irishman) hears a "wailing woman", a banshee. Another dude sees a mermaid. Another hears the voice of a dead loved one. All of those are omens of death. DeGroot should've paid closer attention to the warning signs. -Poor Toby Stephens described the last 2 episodes as him having to do 10 pages of heavy, emotional dialogue and then they're like "Now, let's go film that scene where you fight 3 guys at once!". 😂

The sword practice flashbacks of Flint and Silver are my favorite scenes from the whole show. I can't help but get chills and teary-eyed every time I watch them. I love the color grading on them and they are just so beautifully done.

FYI for Nikki-- Toby Stephens does narrate a pirate book on Audible. It's called "Sea Of Thieves: Athena's Fortune". I don't know if it's a good book or not but it's out there. Also, please please consider Luke Arnold's books on Audible, too. He's an amazing writer and reads the audio books himself. The cast came out in support of his novels. One of my other pet theories is that the old man on the ship with Jack is the real "Mr. Flint" from the story Darby McGraw -- our Flint's grandfather -- told him. 😂
