Killing Eleanor for the purpose of Woods Rogers's character development is a BOLD move by the writers. And I love it. I think it was the perfect way for her to go. Remember, Vane warned her about Rogers. He told her he was no different from the pirates. She wanted so badly to believe otherwise, and it got her killed.

I like that Elanor got some redemption at trying to save Maddy, at the end of the day as much as we may have hated her for having Vane killed, he did kill her father, its easy to understand why she sought vengeance, and she clearly had a violent death where she suffered. I think that's more than enough justice for what she did personally, and glad in the end that she could make a step toward some amends before the end. And she also served the biggest FU to Rogers by punishing him for bringing Spain into it, which is a win in my book.

-"You chose. Live with it" is the whole theme of this episode. Silver with Billy. Max with Anne. Rogers with Eleanor. They now have to face the consequences of their choices. -The last time Spain raided the island, Eleanor's mother was killed. Their return has always been her biggest fear. Rogers made her worst nightmare come true and got her killed in the process. -Eleanor's death sums up the tragedy of the character. She always rejected the love offered to her in favor of a false ideal. She rejected Max and Vane for a dream of something else. In the moment of her death, Flint is offering her comfort but she is still reaching for the false image of Rogers. I feel like her being killed by a random soldier with no real grudge against her highlights the brutality of this war. It might have felt satisfying to some fans if she'd died by Jack or Teach. This season has been a lot about the cost of war and when is it too much. -Madi!! Silver's rage will be off the hook now, too. -Flint watching Miranda's house burn is such a powerful image to me. It feels like Nassau is truly lost in that moment.

It also seemed like the writers wanted to sustain her micro redemption through death by having her killed by a random soldier instead of a main character. A vengeance killing may have negated that final redemption entirely which, in turn, would make it pointless.

When you get a chance, rewatch Black Sails. You'll get an appreciation for Eleanor and her decision making.

For me Eleanor is one of the most tragic characters in this show. A large part of who she is was shaped by the initial Rosario raids in which she lost her mother and vowed never to let that happen to the island again. Tragically she ultimately dies while pregnant in a second Spanish raid caused by the man she loves and father to her child. The fact that Vane’s final words to her were the truth yet instilled hatred in her while Flint’s last words to her were a lie but comforted her encapsulates how damaged she was. That conversation with Madi showed she might have finally started to realise her misplaced values in life but unfortunately came too late. Not all deaths in this show are grand like Vane or Teach, but they are all so impactful for the characters and story moving forward.

I loved where this episode ended but would have been completely fine with it ending with that shot of Flint watching her house burn. So many layers to that image.

Amazing reaction. I think you might appreciate her death a little bit more over time. Can't wait for the final four!

I understand your reaction to Ele's death. Not to change it, but to add another example of AWESOME writing. In Ep 4 after Ele's father betrayed her with the captain that had all the guns that flint needed. Gutherie and Scott are talking. It is when he talks Scott into betraying Ele. Gutherie says that Ele is going to get herself killed. By stealing from one empire to fight another. Either by Engiish noose or Spanish sword. Season 1 Ep 4 foreshadowed Ele's death

I think upon a rewatch it's easier to see Eleanor's motivations throughout the series and why she makes the decisions that she does. I very much have a love/hate relationship with her character, but I am glad that she got some form of redemption in the end (even if it was very little) also very sad for her baby because no matter how we feel about Eleanor...her baby was innocent and didn't deserve to die like that.

Yess sir agreed on Eleanor! Remember the producers had s5 cancelled on them? This is where you see the affects of condensing everything into one season. The pacing on the show is always so perfect but this cut so quick, skipping days at a time, and wven showing the passing of a single day. We were just few eps ago out for revenge for Vane and take El down. Its not how they wanted to pace this. This last 2 eps was soppose to be all of s5! Feels very much like few eps of season 7 of Game of Thrones (not 8!!). And it is a little bit like Cersei…many wanted her to have a death of revenge. Unlike season seven though black sales has still made this emotional even with all the jumping. I’m sure it was very frustrating for the cast and producers to have to just close this up in a way they wouldn’t have chosen ….!

Jay

That's common misinformation, it was never cancelled. Steinberg himself said on the podcast they finished their story exactly where they wanted to. The studio would have given them another season if they wanted. I've only seen one article that titled it 'cancelled' but with no actual source of information lol. The only quote was the creator saying they were coming to the end of their story so no need for a 5th season

Charlotte

The show wasn't cancelled before its time. The producers chose to end it with season 4. Steinberg said in interviews that they always knew how they wanted the show to end and they realized in writing season 4 that it was going to bring them to the conclusion they wanted. Starz offered them a 5th season but they declined. Tho all involved have said it would be fun to reunite in 10 or 15 years, when everyone is older, and do "Treasure Island".

Jay

I will absolutely lose my shit if they do Treasure Island!

Charlotte

@Jay Just imagine the events of "Treasure Island" but told from Silver's POV by these writers. 😲

Ashley

Thanks for the info. I first watched 2 years ago w/ a friend who is a mega Black Sails fan, and he explained all that to me. And you are right, many articles usevthe term cancelled. I appreciate letting me know!
