The governor of “im gonna protect the land” being caught shooting a keystone species that people love is a huge scandal. Also the reason he protects the ranch so hard is because he made a promise to his dieing father, when he said “dont give them an inch of it”. So to John, keeping it whole is the only goal, otherwise he breaks his promise and loses his honour. Putting it in a conservation easement keeps it whole.

What I struggle with when it comes to Beth is her blind spot when it comes to Jamie. She fails to see the most obvious truth about who Jamie is. While she sees him as opportunistic, selfish spineless coward she fails to see that makes him the Dutton's greatest threat. The number one truth when it comes to prosecutions & legal entanglements the government always wants the biggest fish. Prosecutor's are more than willing to practice catch & release if it means getting someone bigger. Jamie is not the biggest fish John is. If Beth continues to make Jamie's life total Hell eventually he is going to be so cornered he has nothing to lose by offering up John to those who want to take him down. I dont know how much Beth truly knows about the Train Station and the number of bodies dumped there. Jamie could easily negotiate his crimes into immunity if he cooperates with authorities about the bodies John is responsible for at the train station. Any Prosecutor worth their salt wouldn't blink at giving Jamie immunity if he identifies some of the other bodies they find with his father's body. It is not like John or anyone else can try to pin the other murders on Jamie. Especially considering from what we've seen in flashbacks they've been using the Train Station for so long likely Jamie was still in diapers making it impossible to say he is responsible for those other older bodies.
