In the book they talk about how he survived the escape from Osaka. There were a company of ronin that Toranaga had in the city that helped Buntaro escape. It was a running battle and Buntaro and two other men survived to the border crossing into Toranaga’s fiefdom. They were hunted all that time escaping.

It was common that after a battle the defeated army would be hunted down and killed. As the lesser samurai were paid by the number of heads they’d collect. But they had to be decapitated from a living person and not postmortem. There were doctors that can tell the difference between pre and postmortem. Miyamoto Musashi survived one of these hunts as he was in a battle as a young man, on the losing side and had to run and hide from the winning army.
