This is a remake of the excellent film Dangerous Liaisons starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, and Uma Thurman. That film is an adaptation of a French novel written in 1782. Cruel Intentions is an attempt to set the story in modern times.

Great reaction :). This was my first rewatch of Cruel Intentions in a few years, so it was fun to see it again along with you. It was a favourite of mine when I was a teenager - it’s dark and tragic, but also fun to watch… and the soundtrack is awesome. Every time I hear Bittersweet Symphony, I think of the ending scene… plus I had a crush on Ryan Phillippe back then - I had posters of him on my wall :P. If I remember correctly, my first introduction to both SMG and Ryan was I Know What You Did Last Summer, which I saw in the cinema when it was released in 1997. I started watching Buffy in late 1998 when it began airing on the BBC and I was partway through season 2 when I saw Cruel Intentions in the cinema in June 1999. It was cool to see SMG portray such a different character at the same time that Buffy was airing… and same with Josh Jackson, who was starring in Dawson’s Creek at the time. A bit of trivia: Cruel Intentions was filmed in the summer between Buffy Season 2 and 3, which is why Buffy’s hair colour and style is different at the beginning of season 3. Also, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon began dating a few months before they filmed the movie and they got married a couple of months after it was released (they had 2 children together, but sadly separated in 2006).
