I like the detail of having the spell be broken not feeling like a good thing for the person it happens to. It's not quite as intense but is kind of similar to Buffy remembering what it was like to be in heaven. That feeling of love and unity and certainty being violently stripped away must be awful, and I agree that that was the motivation behind Angel and Fred kissing. Desperation for connection of any kind after such a big spiritual loss.
