It’s amazing how much real history they weave into this fictional story. Caspar Weinberger was the actual Secretary of Defense under President Reagan. And they did work on a missile defense shield, sometimes popularly known as “Star Wars” or the “Strategic Defense Initiative.” It was sold to Americans and allies as an actual protection against Soviet nuclear missiles. But arguably it’s real purpose was to freak out the Soviets and get THEM to overspend on THEIR defense. Who knows how much it was a serious defense plan and how much it was a sneaky way to manipulate the Soviets? Anyway, I think we are meant to conclude in this story that the Soviets were genuinely terrified, because they felt their ONLY means of survival in a world hostile to them was their nuclear missiles. And if they were useless ... what then? Now that they know about the Americans’ plans, what will they do? And what part will Phillip and Elizabeth play in it all?
